QHY offers a very comprehensive and flexible adapter system that allows our cameras to achieve focus with a variety of accessories, including camera lens adapters, off-axis guiders, filter wheels and numerous optical systems. The many potential combinations of these items produce an equally large variety of back-focus distances that must be considered to make it all work together. This variety and flexibility, however, also can be confusing particularly for new users. This is one of the reasons why we at Baader Planetarium keep receiving customer inquiries on the subject of "How do I adapt my QHY camera to my telescope?"
How do I adapt my QHY camera to my telescope?
If you use a refractor, a Schmidt-Cassegrain or a Newtonian telescope WITHOUT any other special optical accessories in the optical path, the answer is simple. Since there are no requirements for a specific back focal length, the camera can be flanged to the focuser via a T2/2 inch adapter (standard T mount - thread size M42x0.75) or M48/2 inch adapter. The camera image is focused via the focuser and imaging can be started. Filter wheels and/or off axis guiders in the optical path - provided there is sufficient focus travel - do not play a role here.
The situation is different when special telescopes such as the Celestron RASA or Hyperstar systems are to be used, or optical accessories are inserted into the optical path in refractors or Newtonian telescopes. Both the fast (f/2.0) Celestron telescopes and special optical accessories require - if they are to provide perfect star images - a precisely maintained back focus value (BFL - Back Focus Length) between the additional optics and the sensor surface. Accessories include Multi Purpose Coma Correctors (MPCC) for Newtonian telescopes and focal reducers or field flatteners for refractors. This also includes lenses for Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras.
If, in addition to the simple camera adaptation, accessories such as a filter wheel and/or off-axis guider are added, the assembly of adapter rings can be quite tricky if a required back focus has to be kept to a few millimeters, and different camera models also have different mechanical distances between the camera body and the sensor surface (back focal distance). However, it is a great advantage that the required back focus distances of optical accessories is 55mm by default; this is the back focal distance of the old SLR cameras (the distance between the lens bayonet of the camera body and the film surface).
QHY Adapter Kits
We have therefore - together with QHY - put together a series of complete adapter sets (instead of single adapter rings) that cover 99% of all possible combinations with QHY cameras and accessories. All these adapter sets have a M48 female thread on the telescope side or a Canon/Nikon bayonet for connecting DSLR lenses. The direct telescope connection is then made via the Baader M48 adapter system or via the Baader M48/2 inch adapter.
As a user, you only need to know the selected camera model and any accessories, then you can select the required adapter combination from the table and order it from us. We will then directly deliver the calculated results and the corresponding adapters. Please note that the products shown in the graphics of the PDF file, such as cameras, filter wheels, Off Axis Guider modules, etc., are NOT included in the scope of delivery of the Combo, but only the required adapter rings and screws.
The PDF-file lists all kits which we will be offering in 2021.
Please note: After the release of these kits, many single adapters will for the most part (except a few models as shown in Table 3) no longer be available individually.
