I finally had a chance to test my DIY solar filter made from Baader AstroSolar Film ND 3.8 on my Celestron C11 EdgeHD
Baader AstroSolar film is known for preserving optical resolution extremely well. In my first-light images, the Sun remained crisp with good contrast, and I did not notice softness or distortion from the filter cell.

Viele Grüße an alle Sonnenbeobachter

I plan to shoot the august 2026 eclipse from Spain. I have a Sony A6700 + Minolta 500mm f8 mirror lens. I plan to shoot photos and also take videos.
Given the sun is so low in the sky do I need the ND 5.0 filter, or can I just go with this ND 3.8?
ionut / July 31, 20261 Answer
For the 500mm f/8 lens, we would tend to recommend an ND 3.8 filter. Because this allows for shorter exposure times. The resolving power of your relatively long-focal-length lens is good enough to reveal details that could benefit from this—such as sunspots. However, since your camera produces very little noise even at high ISO settings, an ND 5 filter will certainly yield good results with short exposure times as well.

Which side of the film should face the sun? Not indicated on packaging.
Angela / March 26, 20241 Answer
- There is no back- or frontside on our AstroSolar film. It is equally coated on both sides, so you can use it either way for building your solar filter.Baader Web Team / March 27, 202400

can "AstroSolar Photo Film OD 3.8" be used for solar eclipse photography using a Nikon 300mm or 500mm and mirrorless camera? how is this film different or better then other solar films like Thousand Oaks "Silver Black Polymer" and SolarLite" films or Baader "AstroSolar Safety Film" for Eclipse photography with a Nikon Mirrorless camera?
Dave\id / February 11, 20241 Answer
- For a camera lens, you are better of with the regular (visual) ND5 film - the photo-film is made for slow f/ratios (like f/30), which are achieved by a telescope in eyepiece projection, but not with a camera lens. Wit a camera lens and ND3.8, the image will be much too bright. Please also take a look at our FAQ at https://astrosolar.com/en/faqs/ where we answered this and other questions more in detail. Concerning other manufacturers: Comperative advertizing is prohibited in Germany. If you do your own research in the web, you will find countless opinions on all the materials mentioned. How do I mount this film on the front of a 6-inch SCT? Do I have to build my own mount?
Charles / April 8, 20231 Answer
- You can either buy BDSF: OD 3.8 Baader Digital Solar Filter 160mm #2459374 which comes mounted in a temperature-compensating filter cell, or you build your own filter cell as described here: https://www.baader-planetarium.com/en/downloads/dl/file/id/338/product/3044/how_to_make_your_own_photo_solar_filter_for_cameras_and_telescopes.pdf and here https://astrosolar.com/en/information/how-to/Baader Web Team / April 11, 202300

Is there a side of the foil that should face the sun or is the foil the same both sides. thanks
Jon Simmonds / January 17, 20231 Answer
- No, the film has the same coating on both sides and it doesn't matter which side you will face to the sun.Baader Web Team / January 17, 202320

Can I use AstroSolar films at deep temperatures
Anonymous / November 28, 20181 Answer
- For exactly this purpose we do supply the ASTF-series of mounted solar filters. The fastening rim on which the film is affixed to has the same expansion coefficient as the film itself. and that very ring is free-floating in the cell that mounts onto the telescope tube. Hence there is no stress build-up extended onto the film as it shrinks with temperature variation. The film itself will not be harmed by temperatures between -50°C up to +50°C. Below the film will become stiff and further below (- 100°C) even brittle. Above 50°C the adhesive that fastens the film onto its mounting-ring may start to become soft - in case that temperature persists for longer than 24 hours.Baader Web Team / November 28, 201892
