Now available: New Baader UBVRI and SLOAN/SDSS (ugriz') Photometric Filters
Some things cannot be improved. You can only make them better. Filters for astrophotography are constantly being improved to adapt them to modern imaging systems and changing environmental conditions. Our CMOS-optimized narrowband filters are the best example for this development and research process. There are other demands for those filters which are used for science instead of pretty pictures: they must deliver data that are comparable even with decades-old data sets. New developments must therefore only improve production and handling without changing the filter characteristics themselves. The filters used today for scientific photometry with digital sensors go back to the filter sets introduced by Johnson and Cousins, which were developed in the 1950s-1970s and which were adapted in the 1990s by M. Bessel for CCD cameras - in each case using the techniques available at the time. The original UBV filters consisted of coloured glass, partly even without protective coating. Therefore, the V filter, for example, worked wonderfully in dry observing sites. However, because its BGT39 material was exposed to the environment without protection and had hygroscopic properties, it aged if there was high huminity: so, under less favourable conditions, it quickly got hazy. IntroIris NebulaPleiadesLDN 1495 Attn. click above images for complex content Both, CMOS and CCD cameras designed for (amateur) astronomy typically have a spectral sensitivity from 400nm to more or less 850nm. But RGB filter sets for astronomy only use the range from about 400nm to 700nm and the on-sensor color filter arrays of consumer cameras only cover about 420nm to 640nm. That means, about one third of the spectral bandwidth is wasted. The three central filters used for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) split the the spectral range of interest into three approximately equal parts: G': 410nm to 550nm, R': 555nm to 695nm and I': 695nm to 845nm. So these filters would be a perfect choice for three-color images with modern cameras. That's probably one reason why these filters became quite popular in professional astronomy. But professionals normally use custom-made filters which are out of reach for amateurs. Baader Planetarium is now the first company which offers these SDSS filter to a wider clientele. Results of the tests made by Galli Gianni about the new Baader UBVRI Bessel filters
Test report on our new Baader dielectric Bessel filters (prepared by Gianni Galli) During the last weeks I made several tests and analysis about your new Baader UBVRI filters. First, I obtained the transmission curves of the filters from the OD data I find in your website. To transform the OD data in curves, I used the following equation: Transmission = 1/10^OD. In this way, I was able to get the following curves for U, B, V, R and I filters: So now I can compare the transmission curve of your filters with the Bessell standard UBVRI filter curves. My opinion is that your U,V,R filters are well aligned to the standard, while B and I filters show some differences. B filter shows the so-called “read-leak”, a transmission peak at about 1200 nm: this is a well-known problem in AAVSO and in ANS Collaboration. The first version of Astrodon B filter showed this characteristic: Henden (at that time AAVSO President) asked to Astrodon to modify the B filter and the last version of this one was correct. The “read-leak” can give some problems when you want to measure a very red target, because the CCD not always have zero response...

DART impact - NASA used large 100mm Baader Bessel filters

Such an exciting and successful mission to be a part of (and lots of observing work).” NASA Hazardous Asteroids research used large 100mm Baader Bessel filters to successfully image DART impact with the MRO 2.4-meter telescope On the 11th of October 2022 after two weeks of analysis, NASA confirmed that the DART mission impact changed the Asteroid's motion in space. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART for short, used the kinetic impact of a spacecraft to successfully alter an asteroids orbit. The mission involved crashing a spacecraft at 14,000 miles per hour into an asteroid , named Dimorphos which was orbiting a larger asteroid Didymos, and measuring the change in orbit to understand the deviation achieved. This is the first time a celestial object motion has been altered on purpose and the first full-scale demonstration, proving asteroid deflection technology to be a success.
