QHY 5-III-678 M/C Guiding- and Planetary Camera

The QHY 5-III-678 M/C is the latest evolution of version 2 of the QHY 5III series of planetary and guiding cameras. The QHY 5-III-678 M/C can be considered an improved version of its earlier, the QHY 5-III-178M CMOS Camera (#1931024 , € 375,-) .

Like the Sony IMX 178, Sony's new IMX 678 sensor is a 1/1.8-inch back illuminated (BSI) sensor.  However, compared to the IMX 178, it has higher resolution (smaller pixels) and higher QE, as well as increased sensitivity in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral range. In addition, the QHY 5-III-678 M/C camera modules have some improved features such as:

  • Larger internal image memory DDR 512MB
  • Improved front and end design
  • Compatibility with CS and C-mount lenses
  • More stable and faster USB 3.2 Type-C interface
  • Universal ST-4 guiding port
  • Control LED for status indication.

The new QHY 5-III-678 M/C has an interesting new feature, a unscrewable M 28.5 filter holder with built-in 12.5mm (1/2") UV/IR blocking filter.
Removing this retaining ring along with the built-in 1/2" filter allows all standard 1 1/4" filter be screwed on instead. This allows interesting applications for image acquisition from UV to far into the NIR range.
At the same time, however, the 1/2" filter standard also offers further possibilities for using other types of filters that are common in industry.

We describe more detailed information about these features here.

Ausgezeichnete Kamera

More advantages compared to the QHY 5-III-178
For my use in planetary with a large diameter, this camera gives me more advantages compared to the QHY 5-III-178 which are:

- Easy installation with the software I use.
- Absence of artifact because real monochrome sensor.
- Larger sensors reduce the number of images in the case of mosaics.
- Smaller pixels allow the use of less powerful blows.
- Much better sensitivity in infrared to combat turbulence and allow either to reduce the exposure time or the gain
- The number of frames per second is barely lower than QHY 5-III-178 despite the greater amount of information transferred to the computer.

Vielen Dank. Bengt Lindqvist
