QHY 5-III Series USB 3.0 Guiding and Planetary Cameras

The QHY5-III series cameras are USB 3 super-speed cameras and guiders. They can be used in a standard 1.25-inch eyepiece holder and have an adjustable location ring for confocality with an eyepiece.

QHY-5-III-485C Color Planetary and AllSky Camera

We are pleased to announce a new addition to QHYCCDs line of high speed, high QE, low noise, planetary cameras, the QHY-5-III-485C. The QHY-5-III-485C uses Sony's new IMX485, back-illuminated, 8.4 megapixel color CMOS sensor with an array of 3864 x 2176 pixels at 2.9um. With USB 3.0 interface, the full frame rate of 18.5 FPS at 16-bits or 44 FPS at 8-bits. Smaller regions of interest will yield even faster frame rates. This new camera makes a great planetary combo with the other newly released  QHY 5-III-462 M/C CMOS Camera (various versions available) (various versions available) .

Large Sensor Size

The QHY-5-III-485C has 4 times the area of the smaller QHY-5-III-462C and 4 times the number of pixels. In area it is the same size as the popular IMX174 sensor but with back-illumination and higher resolution. The generous field of view provided by this larger sensor makes it ideal for solar and lunar imaging whereas the smaller, faster  QHY 5-III-462 M/C CMOS Camera (various versions available) (various versions available) with its enhanced IR response is superior for imaging planets like Jupiter, Saturn and Mars.

High QE and sHCG (Super High Cain Conversion)

While the QHY-5-III-485C does not have the extended near IR response of the QHY5III462C, it does have sHGC (Super High Cain Conversion) for exceptionally low (less than 1e-) read noise. For solar and lunar imaging, the NIR response is not required but the ability to take multiple short exposures in H-alpha light is ideal for solar use and making movies of solar prominences, arcs and eruptions.

The QHY-5-III-485C standard package includes a 2.5mm Fisheye lens that converts the planetary camera intoa high-resolution, 8.3 Megapixel All Sky camera with 180-degree field of view. The following items are included with the camera:

Lowest Readout Noise, Fast frame rates (120+ FPS)

QHY5III462C uses the latest (6th Generation) 2.1 megapixel IMX462 STARVIS CMOS sensor from Sony (available in color only). The pixel size is 2.9µm making it the same size and resolution as the sensor used in the QHY5III290 camera (product is dicontinued) that has been so successfully used for planetary imaging by some of the best planetary imagers in the world. The QHY462C has a fast USB 3.0 interface. 

The IMX462 sensor is back-illuminated and has new features that give it two significant advantages over other planetary cameras:

  1. the IMX462 sensor has sHGC for extremely low read noise (less than one electron) at high gain. This is ideal for stacking hundreds or thousands of short planetary images.
  2. it is exceptionally sensitive in the NIR. In this generation of sensor, the photodiode portion of the pixel well is deepened, allowing photons of longer wavelength to penetrate deeper into the substrate and thereby dramatically increases the sensor's sensitivity to red light and near infrared light (NIR). The RGB filters over the pixels become transparent at NIR wavelengths, so the sensor displays almost equal peak sensitivity to NIR light as it does to light in the visible spectrum.

The peak QE in the NIR around 800nm is as high or higher as the peak QE in the visible wavelengths. For planetary imagers using a methane filter that passes light around 880nm this is welcome news.

The QHY5III462C camera will include two 1.25" screw-in filters, a UV/IR cut filter to isolate the visible wavelengths for normal RGB imaging and an IR850 filter that will cut the visible wavelengths but pass wavelengths above 850nm. Together, this yields a camera that can image in (a) visible light only, or (b) NIR light only, or (c) combined visible and NIR. Passing all the light, visible and NIR, will produce a very sensitive luminance frame (when shot through a reflector or other scope capable of focusing visible and NiR together) for producing LRGB color images.

QHY5-III-174 Mono / Color
High QE 78% and USB 3.0 interface

The QHY 5-III-174 is the first in the QHY5III series CMOS USB 3.0 cameras. The camera is designed to be an excellent planetary, lunar, solar and meteor capture video camera. With a 50mm, F/1.4 C-mount lens it will record 8th to 9th magnitude stars at 30 frames per second (33 ms exposure). This high sensitivity with HD resolution will push video astronomy to new heights.

Sony introduced a global shutter (GS) CMOS imaging technology called PregiusTM that redefines the global shutter imaging category and provides the best of both worlds: fast frame rates and CCD-like imaging performance. The technology also offers reduced dark noise, which enables higher gains without compromising image quality, as well as higher quantum efficiency. The global shutter eliminates pixelization when imaging the moon and planets and moon caused by atmospheric agitation and high frame rates.

The unique QHYCCD design retains the 1.25-inch eyepiece design of the QHY5-II series but adds features for better cooling. This design is more efficient in transfer of heat to the outer case enabling lower noise especially in high ambient temperatures.

The 1.25 inch design also offers the shortest possible backfocus, making the camera ideal for off-axis guiding. In addition, the QHY5III174 uses a more robust LEMO style connector for the guide port. These connectors are known for being both rugged and reliable.

The QHY5III174 is available in both mono and color versions. The camera is well suited for solar imaging using short focal length telescopes that will capture a full solar disk within the FOV.

Back-Illuminated, 6,0 Megapixel

The QHY 5-III-178's sensor is Sony's STARVIS BSI image sensor. STARVIS is a trademark of Sony Corporation. BSI means the sensor is Back Side Illuminated which dramatically increases the sensor's sensitivity and produces high picture quality in the visible-light and near infrared light regions. Available in both color and monochrome.

This sensor has small 2.4um pixels and a 1/1.8-inch sensor that can be used for high-precison guiding data with a good FOV for easily finding guide stars. The camera is designed to be a wide FOV autoguider, high-resolution planetary camera, and entery level deep sky camera. For deep sky imaging, the QHY5III178 uses our proprietary anti-amp glow control function that reduces amplifer glow significantly Output is 50 FPS at full resolution and up to 190 FPS at selected ROI. The cooled models with this sensor are the QHY178M/C.
