Great filter

Good transmission from corner to corner with my f/3.6 wide field configuration at least on an 28mm * 22mm sensor. The filter diameter also generously covers entire chip. This filter works very well also on my color CMOS camera as both the blue and green pixels have great QE at 500 nm. This is 3/4 of all the pixels.

3.5 / 4nm f/3 Ultra-Highspeed Filter-Set – CMOS-optimized (H-alpha / O-III / S-II)

The filter set everyone with an f3 system should own

Before Baader released these filters, astrophotographers who shot with f/3 systems had a predicament. The f/3 focal ratio is fast enough to blue-shift the incoming light to such a degree that you would lose a lot of signal as the emission band is no longer centred on the band pass. At the same time, f/3 is not so fast that you could use filters specifically pre-shifted for f/2 systems such as Rasa or HyperStar without running into the same issue on the other side of the band pass. So you basically had three choices. The first option was to shoot with 7nm filters as they have a wide enough band-pass to accommodate for the blue-shift. This is not an ideal solution as the whole point of owning a fast system is to maximise your signal-to-noise ratio and reduce integration time (ignoring aperture size as the majority of astrophotographers are limited by seeing and guiding rather than by diffraction). Why bother paying for a fast system and struggling with collimation and tilt if you could get a similar SNR shooting with 3nm filters on a slower system? The second option would be to try your luck with 5nm or 3nm filters anyway. This would usually result in an even worse SNR than shooting with 7nm filters due to the blue-shift. The last option is to order custom made filters from Chroma which are specifically pre-shifted for f/3 systems. This is what you’d probably do if you were shooting with a PlaneWave Delta Rho or Officina Stellare Veloce but I didn’t even bother enquiring with Chroma how much this would cost as I’d probably have to sell my car to pay for them. By coming out with these f/3 filters, Baader have done a great service for the astrophotography community by enabling people who own f/3 systems to finally get the most out of their setup. I own a Sky-Watcher Quattro 200P with a Starizona Nexus and as soon as I found out these filters existed I knew I had to have them. When it comes to performance, they blow my 7nm ZWO filters out of the water. I’ve never owned Chroma or Astrodon filters but I struggle to see how they could perform too much better than these Baaders. Halos are very minimal for my particular setup. Although I did observe halos when shooting Sirius, I saw no halos at all on a 10-minute sub-exposure of Alnitak. Below I’ve attached two 3-minute sub-exposures (cropped) of NGC 3576 shot in Bortle 5 skies during similar moon phases. One was taken with a ZWO 7nm HA filter and the other was taken with the Baader 3.5nm HA filter. I don’t think I need to specify which is which. The difference is night-and-day. The Baader has significantly more contrast and detail in the nebulosity thanks to the narrower band pass letting in half of the light pollution. Even the stars appear tighter with the Baader filter although I admit my collimation was slightly off for exposure taken with the ZWO filter. These filters are definitely a must-have for anyone shooting with an f/3 system.

Der 3,5nm-Ha-Filter ist sehr gut geeignet, um Deep-Sky-Objekte aus der Stadt heraus zu fotografieren. Auf den Fotos ist der Orionnebel zu sehen. Beim ersten Bild handelt es sich um ein Stack aus 36 x 300 s. Die Aufnahmesession erfolgte unter Bortle 7 kurz vor Neumond, bei eher schlechtem Seeing. Das Foto ist gestreckt und mit PixInsights HDRMultiscaleTransform mit 9 Layern bearbeitet. Weitere Anpassungen gibt es nicht. Ich denke, so sieht man besser, was der Filter kann, als wenn ich das Foto voll überarbeitet hochgeladen hätte. ((Spiegel-)Eiersterne und Bildrauschen hin oder her.) Das zweite Foto ist eine Einzelaufnahme aus der Session, ebenfalls gestreckt. Bisher habe ich immer nur gefasste Filter verwendet. Insofern war es ein wenig aufregend, den ungefassten ins Filterrad einzusetzen. Das hat dann zwar gut geklappt, aber die teleskopseitige Markierung ist weniger leicht zu erkennen, als es die Produktfotos glauben lassen. Ich musste ein paar Mal hin und her drehen, um sicher zu gehen. Mir gefällt der Filter nach dem ersten Einsatz sehr gut. Hoffentlich spielt auch mal das Wetter mit, um mehr mit ihm arbeiten zu können.

f/2 Highspeed (CCD-Filterset) vs. f/2 Ultra-Highspeed (3.5/4 nm) – CMOS Optimiert

Equipment für den Filtervergleich und Beispielbilder: Celestron RASA 11” f/2.2, ZWO ASI 1600MM Pro (Alle Fotos außer NGC 2244 – Rosettennebel) / QHY268M, Baader f/2 Ultra-Highspeed Filterset 50x50 mm, Baader RGB Filterset CMOS, Baader UFC + UFC Tilter. Ein direkter Vergleich: F/2 Highspeed Filter: Mich hat die frühere Reihe der f/2 Highspeed Filter seit etwa 2.5 Jahren begleitet und ich habe damit tolle Ergebnisse, sowie auch einige Auszeichnungen erzielen können. Gerade der H-alpha und S-II Filter haben auch bei meinem eher schlechten Bortle 6/7 Himmel einen guten Kontrast erzielt, der O-III Filter hatte da schon mehr mit meinem hellen Himmel und dem Mond zu kämpfen. Ich habe den deutlichen helleren Hintergrund immer durch kürzere Belichtungszeiten bzw. niedrigeren Gain ausgeglichen. Das allbekannte Halo-Problem um helle Sterne habe ich meistens nur beim O-III Filter (manchmal aber auch beim S-II Filter) feststellen können. Durch vorsichtige Bildbearbeitung konnte ich die Halos aber meistens restlos „retuschieren“. F/2 Ultra-Highspeed Filter (3.5 / 4 nm): Die neuen Ultra-Highspeed Filter zeigen dagegen „out of the Box“ einen deutlich höheren Kontrast, Sterne werden wesentlich besser unterdrückt und Nebelstruckturen sind deutlich hervorgehoben (Vergleichsbilder WR 134). Ich habe bisher keinerlei Reflexionen oder Halos feststellen können und das bei f/2.2! Das neue Filterset harmonisiert zudem wesentlich besser bei gleichen Belichtungszeiten von H-alpha/S-II mit O-III. Ich belichte mittlerweile in allen drei Schmalbandkanäle mit dem gleichen Gain/Belichtungszeit und erreiche bei allen Filtern einen ähnlichen Mittelwert. Fazit: Eine deutliche Kontraststeigerung in allen Schmalbandkanälen! Der O-III Filter zeigt definitiv den gravierendsten Unterschied – keinerlei Reflexionen und nur minimale Halos bei super hellen Sternen wie Alnitak. Der H-alpha und S-II Filter sind absolut tadellos! Hervorragend optimiert für die neuen CMOS Sensoren (IMX 571 / IMX 455), aber auch an den älteren CMOS Sensoren wie dem Panasonic MN34230 Chip (ASI 1600MMP) problemlos einsetzbar.

Baader H-alpha Ultra-Narrowband-Filters (3.5nm) – CMOS-optimized

Praktisch reflexfrei und ohne Halos.

Ich hatte mir kürzlich das neue 3,5 nm Ha-Filter von Baader zusätzlich angeschafft. Aber nicht, weil ich mit dem "alten" nicht zufrieden war.:Das bisherige Ha-Filter ist ein 50mm Rundfilter, welches ich in einer Filterschublade verwende. Ich hatte mir vor etlichen Jahren die Kamera FLI-PL 16803 mit dem großen Chip (36,5 x 36,5 mm) gekauft. Dafür brauchte ich natürlich auch passende große Filter (50 x 50 mm). Ich hatte mir deshalb dazu ein 7-fach FLI Filterrad für quadratische 50x50 mm Filter angeschafft. Da habe ich die LRGB-Filter von Baader drin, ein 5nm OIII- und ein 5 nm SII-Filter von Astrodon (damals gab es sonst nur deutlich breiterbandigere Filter), und dann noch ein 6nm Ha-Filter von Astronomik (zu dem bin ich gekommen wie die berühmte "Jungfrau zum Kind"). Dieses Filter ist ebenfalls weitgehend halofrei, es ist aber leider auch wesentlich dünner als die anderen Filter, sodass bei entsprechendem Filterwechsel immer eine deutliche Nachfokussierung erforderlich ist. Und dieses Filter habe ich jetzt durch das neue Ha-Filter von Baader ersetzt. Erstens weil ich ein deutlich schmäleres Filter haben wollte, und zweitens das Nachfokussieren auf ein Minimum beschränken wollte. Nach meinen bisherigen Erfahrungen sind beide Filterversionen - also das "alte" und das neue 3,5 nm-Filter, praktisch reflexfrei und ohne Halos. Bei dem jetzt festen Aufbau in der Sternwarte benutze am Newton gerne das Filterrad, einfach weil es bequemer ist. Bei mobilem Aufbau hat die Filterschublade Vorteile, weil alles einfacher ist. Bei den Cirrus-Aufnahmen am 30.9.2021 hatte ich zuerst die ergänzenden Ha-Aufnahmen gemacht, anschließend OIII und zum Abschluss noch RGB-Aufnahmen. Ich habe mir angewöhnt, bei einem Filterwechsel sicherheitshalber den Fokus mittels Batinovmaske noch einmal zu kontrollieren. Für den Newton habe ich nur eine Batinovmaske, für die Apos nutze ich Cuzdi-Masken. Der ASA-Newton ist sehr fokusstabil, auch bei abfallender Nachttemperatur. Er besitzt eine motorische Fokussierung, und bei dem dazugehörigen Steuerprogramm kann ich die Fokusserposition exakt ablesen und sehr feinfühlig verstellen. Ich benutze meist 0,05 mm-Fokusschritte. Das reicht i.d.R., es geht aber ggf. noch erheblich feinfühliger. Beim Wechsel auf das 5nm OIII-Filter von Astrodon habe ich festgestellt, dass der Fokus noch immer stimmt. Ich habe nicht nachfokussieren müssen! Nach den 8 x 8 Min OIII-Belichtungen, also nach einer guten Stunde, habe ich dann auf Rot, anschließend auf Grün und dann auf Blau gewechselt. Mit dem Rotfilter habe ich den Fokus noch einmal kontrolliert - und nicht nachstellen müssen, was ich natürlich sehr positiv fand. Bei dem lichtstarken Newton (F/3,6) würde auch eine geringe Fokusdifferenz sofort auffallen, weshalb ich entsprechend sorgfältig kontrolliert habe. Ich habe eine unkalibrierte Ha-Einzeldatei hergenommen (so wie sie aus der Kamera kam, aufgenommen mit Maxim DL), in Fitswork autogestretcht und dann als TIF in 8 bit abgespeichert. Das Originalformat der Kamera habe ich bereits bei der Aufnahme auf 7000 x 5500 Pixel gecroppt. Einige technische Daten: 1.Kamera: ASI 6200 MM Pro 2.Format: bereits bei der Aufnahme gecroppt auf 7000 x 5500 Px. (Originalformat: 9576 x 6388 Px) 3.Offset 30, Gain 100 (in Maxim DL ist das wegen des ASCOM-Treibers der maximal mögliche Gain), T = -10°C 4.Belichtung: 600 Sekunden 5.Teleskop: ASA8H + 0,95x ASA-Korrektor, F/3.6 Der helle Stern auf dem Bild ist 52 Cyg, mag 4,2. Wenn im Imagepfad irgendwo eine Neigung für Halos oder Reflexionen sein sollte, so müsste das m.E. an diesem hellen Stern sichtbar sein. Ich habe diesbezüglich nichts entdecken können, und bin mit dem Ergebnis mehr als zufrieden.

This image was recorded over two nights under the full moon and the nightafter full moon, with my new SHO 6,5nm filters. I am very pleased at the signal it gave. recorded with a a Skywatcher 150/750 newton and QHY 294M camera Ha: 43 x 6 minutes Sii: 37 x 6 minutes Oiii: 27 x 6 minutes There was a slight halo around the brightest stars in O-iii. However that was manageble in postprocessing. A cut out of the raw O-iii image with the moste severe halo in the images is attached below (star in the center bottom of the overall image).

New filters for a new era of narrowband imaging

For a long time, imaging at F2 was sort of an RGB-only thing for me. But when I came upon the new Baader High Speed Ultra Narrowband F2 Filters, that changed. With the new ability to shoot narrowband targets at 3.5/4/4nm for Ha/Oiii/Sii respectively, this truly changed the way I view narrowband imaging. After thoroughly testing the new filters, I'm happy to say that they work just they way they are supposed to: They produce deep and clean images of narrowband targets with high-resolution CMOS cameras, while avoiding the common issues of F2 imaging such as reflections or halos. I have three sample images which were between 4 and 8 hours of integration time each with my RASA 8" and QHY183M Monochrome camera.

I believe that they can be equated with the most famous brands, with the advantage of a cheaper price. Of course, as soon as I need them, I will seriously consider using these filters for my setup. I purchased one of the new CMOS-optimized, Ultra-Narrowband 4nm OIII filters, in 31mm size (item no. 2961401). After some disappointing results due to flats that would overcorrect my lights, I found that my filter has a dark band that correlates with the position of overcorrected portions of my subs. Baader recommended me to obtain a replacement filter, and to return my filter so that they can examine it. And now I just wanted to let you know that, following after this message my dealer has instructed me to send my filter to them, and provided me with a replacement filter, free of any charge The new filter doesn't show any visual defect, and produces very fine images. The support from Baader Planetarium, as well as my dealer, in this matter has been amazingly good and I greatly appreciate that Attached you can see my first test HOO image, produced with my Baader 3.5nm H-alpha, and with the new 4nm O-III

Visuelle Nutzung des H-Beta 5.5nm CMOS Filters

Im Sommer 2021 fragte ich bei Baader Planetarium nach, ob ich die neuen OIII CMOS Filter paarweise zwecks Erkundung ihrer visuellen Möglichkeiten in der Fernglasbeobachtung galaktischer Nebel ausleihen könnte und erhielt außerdem noch Prototypen des nun erhältlichen CMOS-optimierten H-Beta Narrowband Filters 5.5nm. Ich hatte – ich muss es gestehen – zunächst keine besonderen Erwartungen an diesem Filter. Ich wurde jedoch schnell eines Besseren belehrt. Seit meinen Versuchen mit den Filtern, welche ich in einem ausführlichen Blogpost der Firma Baader Planetarium habe zukommen lassen, konnte ich den enormen Gewinn des 5,5nm Filters in der visuellen Fernglas-Beobachtung ausgedehnter Nebel schon mehrfach am Kaliforniennebel sowie an weiteren Nebeln des Sommer- und Herbsthimmels bestätigt finden. Der Filter ist derart bahnbrechend, dass ich beide Filterpaare käuflich erwerben wollte, ja musste. Ich meine, dass dieser Filter für jeden engagierten Nebelbeobachter preiswert ist angesichts der neuen Türen, die er in der visuellen Beobachtung aufstößt.

Baader H-Beta Narrowband-Filter (5.5nm) – CMOS-optimized

Das neue CMOS-optimierte 5.5nm H-beta Filter begeistert

Ich hatte die Möglichkeit die neuen Baader Filter zu testen. Ziel des Tests war die Beurteilung der Halo-Situation und der Vergleich der Kontraste an einem geeigneten Objekt. Verglichen wurde das neue CMOS-optimierte 5.5nm H-beta Filter gegen das alte 8.5nm H-beta Filter vom 2014, welches sich glücklicher Weise in meinem Besitz befand. Am Ende dieses Tests habe ich es mir erlaubt ein "pretty picture" zu belichten, welches unter astrobin.com auf Anhieb als „Top Picture" nominiert werde! Das neue CMOS-optimierte 5.5nm H-beta Filter begeistert, denn: Wenn ein Halo heller wird als das eigentliche Signal, dann wird die EBV zur Glücksache. Die Rekonstruktion des Signals unter dem Halo wird zu einer subjektiven Einschätzung. Beim neuen CMOS-optimierte 5.5nm H-beta Filter störenden die Halos praktisch nicht mehr, und „Halo-Reste“ an sehr hellen Sternen können bei der EBV leicht beseitigt werden. Der Kontrast ist nun auf einem exzellenten Niveau angekommen. Das neue Filter liefert photographisch sogar bei f/1.9 so kontrastreiche Daten, dass man glauben könnte, dass es sich um Ha-Daten handelt. Im Vergleich zum alten H-Beta Filter ein Quantensprung!

At half bandwith. The 10 nm O III filters were done with older coating technology, hence peak transmission was around 85% - which might be the core of your question. The newer 9 nm O III filters are three cavity filters with steeper slopes, higher peak transmission and better off band blocking – it is another coating technology alltogether.

We must point out that purchasing the ERF from another source can lead to a repair becoming chargeable in the event of a defect during the warranty and guarantee period.

A normal ERF is cheaper to buy. But it does not have the same specifications as our DERF: Simple ERF filters are made of solid-colored red glass (Schott RG 610 or RG 630). This glass is a long-pass filter; it allows all energy to pass through from approx. 570 nm, including the full thermal radiation (NIR) above 630 nm.

The heat at the focal point is three times higher with this type of "protective glass" than with our dielectrically blocked D-ERF filter. As a result, the immersion oil in the stack of block glasses, polarizers and etalon in the H-alpha filter literally is getting boiled. An H-alpha filter that is permanently overheated in this way ages very quickly. We would not be able to maintain our 5-year warranty under any circumstances.

Incidentally, the colored glass from which these simple ERFs are made is very "soft" and chemically unstable (= prone to weathering). The soft molten glass tends to form streaks. When we were still working with this glass, we had to double-pass test each piece on the optical bench and had a high reject rate. This means that simpler ERF filters age due to the oxygen in the air if they are not coated, the surface becomes "rough" after a few years and the image contrast collapses.

The problem with the glass quality of the RG 610 remains even if a UV/IR-reducing coating is vapor-deposited. We have already done this many years ago as C-ERF filter (= Cool ERF), but after long-term experience we abandoned it again and the lesson learned was the development of the D-ERF (Dielectric ERF). Above all, the soft glass often warped during coating, which led to even more rejects.

There are manufacturers who offer such ERF or C-ERF filters but do not test every lens as thoroughly as we did on the optical bench. This explains the cheap offers of C-ERF and ERF filters on the market - for which the customer ultimately pays much more than if he had purchased a high-quality DERF, with significantly reduced image quality and reduced service life of the Halpha filter.
Our D-ERF filters are made of highly homogeneous, streak-free, finely polished BK-7 glass. They are painstakingly coated with a dielectric coating system that is resistant to ageing and precisely matched to the Solar Spectrum filters.

The Solar Spectrum filter only shows its most important advantages (ageing resistance, sharpness and contrast) with our dielectric „D“-ERF coating system were we have full control over the coating process and can verify it´s effectivity. Only then can we guarantee for the 5 years of ageing resistance for the Solar Spectrum H-alpha etalon-stack. Especially with a research grade filter, usage of a "normal" ERF is tantamount to "degrading" the filter. Every chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
