Dear Sir,
I use a Baader T-2 prism diagonal with a 1,25" clicklock eyepiece adapter. If I insert the Zeiss Abbe barlow lens into this clicklock will this not hit the prism inside the diagonal? I ask because the 1.25" sleve of this barlow seems much longer than the 1.25" clicklock eyepiece adapter I use??
Thank you very much!
Best Regards

To get this Balow to 3x, which Varilock should I buy? The Varilock 29 or the Varilock 46? Thanks a lot.

Can you please confirm the exact Focal Length I need to make 2.5x magnification and 3x magnification?

I see the diagram says 70mm? but one of the responses was that it is 65mm?

Do you know what the lens element to imaging plane distances are for 2x, 3x and 4x operation? Also the text says no loss of quality at 3x then elsewhere it says no loss of quality up to 4x. Is 4x okay or is that a misprint?

Thanks
Martin

Can you please explain what the big ring that turns does? (the ring below the click-lock) should I clamp that down?

Do you have any transmission information for this barlow in the 300-400nm range? The transmission curve shown suggests a very steep fall off. We wish to offer a 2x barlow for imaging Venus with the U filter and this may or may not be suitable.

When I use the barlow and Varilock does it work like a zoom eyepiece? Is there anything else I need? Thanks.

Is this Barlow compatible with an ASKAR FRA400 apochromatic refractor without reducer ?
Will the field be flat? Will the stars be round throughout the image?

I would like to know the clear aperture of this Barlow.
Additionally, if the sleeve containing the Barlow lens is used in place of the T2/1.25" nose piece of a MaxbrightII binoviewer, would this cause vignetting as the clear aperture of this Barlow looks small?

Thanks

I plan on using the Zeiss Barlow with a Takahashi Eyepiece Turret. This turret has a restriction on the length of the barrel that can inserted into the turret. This length should not exceed 31mm.

Appreciate it if you could let me know on the length of the barrel of the Zeiss Barlow.

Thanks,

Sabir

Can we use this barlow after a Wynne coma corrector (Asa Korr4 '') for a Newton f / 3.
Could the fast f / 3 aperture be a problem?
Thank you.

Direct T-2 Adaption possible - extends magnification up to 3x - without quality loss

The Carl Zeiss Abbe Barlow lens consists of two parts. The front barlow section ends with a photographic T-2 thread suitable to directly connect onto standard DSLR T-rings. , at the separation level a T-2 photo thread - mounted with our Baader ClickLock eyepiece clamp with the known rotary clamping system. A direct T-2 adaptation is possible.

An enlargement of the imaging scale up to three times is possible without loss of quality. On the first T-2 thread you can connect normal T-rings, so you have a 2x Barlow lens - with 1¼ " barrel - in front of every camera, webcam or DSLR camera housing. If you add T-2 extensions the magnification can be extended by up to 3x. We recommend using our T-2 Varilock clamps for stepless adjusting of the optical length: Varilock 20-29mm (# 2956929) or Varilock 29-46mm (# 2956946)

Spectral transmission curve of the Zeiss Abbe Barlow

This (german) document attests to the exceptional performance of the multi-layer anti-reflection coating applied onto the new 2016 Carl Zeiss Abbe-Barlow-Lens made in Jena / Germany. Carl Zeiss has chosen to develop and apply the very best coating ever made available to the most discriminating visual observer. The coatings feature a 0.2% loss over the exact spectral region where the night-adapted human eye is most sensitive. This extremely high efficiency also translates to near-zero coating scatter for the highest contrast ever seen. No lens-system has ever been coated to more stringent requirements for visual observation and for VIS-photography as well.

The Baader Barlow lenses at a glance

With currently five different barlow lenses in Baader Planetarium's product range, it is not easy to keep track of which model fulfils which function best.

Fluorite Flatfield Converter (FFC) / 3x-8x (#2458200 , € 730,-)

90mm field of view also for medium format cameras - uncompromising quality even for extreme enlargements.

Focus gain: depending on configuration about 1.5-2.6cm

Carl Zeiss 1¼" Abbe Barlow lens 2x (#1603321 , € 477,-)

Legendary Zeiss quality for the common magnification range between 2x and 3x (with additional T-2 extensions). With T-2 connection for cameras or eyepiece clamps. The qualitatively equivalent solution to the Fluorite FFC when smaller field size and smaller post-magnification are desired.

Focus gain: About 3 cm

VIP 2x modular barlow lens, visual and photographic (#2406101 , € 228,-)

Versatile barlow lens for magnifications from 2x, for use with cameras (via T-2 thread) and eyepieces. Calculated for 35mm image diagonal (full format). With additional T-2 extensions it can also be used for slightly higher magnification factors.

Focus gain at 2x: Approx. 3.3 cm

Baader Q-Barlow 1.3x/ 2.25x (#2956185 , € 55,-)

Inexpensive and amazingly high quality Barlow lens for the lower magnification range: In addition to being used as a normal Barlow lens with eyepiece clamp (with factor 2.25x), the Barlow element can also be used as a negative lens group when screwed directly into (almost) all eyepiece sleeves or directly in front of a camera with 1.25" filter thread and then provides a lower magnification of approximately 1.3x. Ideal for adapting a modern planetary camera to the resolution of an already long focal length telescope. Prerequisite: There must be no other elements in the nose piece that would prevent the approximeately 13 mm long Q-Barlow lens group from being screwed in.

Focus gain at 2.25x: About 0.4 cm

Hyperion Zoom 2.25x Barlow lens (#2956180 , € 133,-) Specially designed for the Hyperion Zoom eyepiece, also fits the filter thread of other eyepieces.

With the included T-2 adapter, it can also be used directly on cameras; provides about 2.7x at 55mm working distance and about 2.3x at 25mm.

Focus gain: About 1.1 cm

After a view months of usage
My last review still stands, but...
I noticed that the outer edges of it's full field of view are fuzzy.
So for astro-imaging at 1,6x,(without click-lock straight on to my astro camera with T2) I recommend only a Micro Four Thirds sensor, then you get will get a supreme image.
It's probably why they sell it as a 2x to 3x barlow.
In this case it's fuzzy edge will be gone.
  • Very sharp optics with no aberrations.
  • Fuzzy outer edges over the full field of view at 1,6x
The lens is quite exposed, so be careful with your coating.

Thanks for your kind review(s)! It is true that Carl Zeiss had indeed designed this lens system for 2x to 3x only.

My first Zeiss optics
I'm quite critical, and love quality in my optics.
I used a Powermate 2,5x but I didn't like it photographically, because of a hotspot in the centre, and a haze over the photo.
This Abbe is twice the money, but three times the quality of the powermate.
It is pin sharp, and very high in contrast. I didn't see any barrel distortion, and it has negligible Chromatic Aberration
High quality optics.
  • Very High Quality Optics, Ultra short (when you don't use click-lock)
