The only function, that still might be left to desire, is an easier way to reach the front adjustment hex-screws of the RASA 8. Due to the very short backfocus available, it is somewhat difficult to reach these screws and to "tweak" the star sizes in each corner of the image to absolute perfectness.
So - in order to even reach this goal (exchange filters AND effortlessly adjust the camera tilt), in February latest we will launch a separate product - only produced for the RASA 8: the FCCT (Filter Changer & Camera Tilter). This unit will feature 3D-printed filter sliders and be only able to accept filters in diameters of 31 mm / 36 mm / and 2"(47.4 mm) w/o cell mount. This is a revolution for the RASA 8 since it makes perfect adjustment of all stars in the field a joy. Already now the first imagers are using this solution as prototypes and the results are outstanding, see here: https://www.baader-planetarium.com/en/blog/rasa-8-extreme-images-michael-jaeger-with-ccd-camera-f2-highspeed-filter/
Since the Field Flattener has a M48 Male thread, you would need the #2459129 Telescope Side Adapter
Next you would need a few spacers which can be calculated by subtracting from the required backfocus, the optical length of the other needed adapters. A list with the calculations and the needed articles is included below. We determined that you would need one 5 mm spacer #2459141
as well as a VariLock spacer set at 18,4 mm #2459145
Then you would need the UFC Basis #2459110 which has an optical length of 13 mm,
the 2" Filter Slider #2459112 (we suggest one slider for each filter, which makes changing filters faster and more comfortable),
the S52 UFC Camera Adapter #2459119,
and the Nikon Z Wide T-Ring #2408335.
To represent everything in a more compact way, I'm putting the whole information in a list form below:
- Article description- -Article number- -Optical length-
1- M48i UFC Telescope Adapter #2459129 1 mm
2- S70 UFC Extension Ring 5mm #2459141 5 mm
3- S70 UFC VariLock 15 - 20 mm #2459145 18,4 mm
4- UFC Base Filter Chamber #2459110 13 mm
4a- UFC Filter Slider #2459112 0 mm
5- S52 Camera dovetail Adapter #2459119 2 mm
6- Nikon Z Wide T-Ring #2408335 8,3 mm
7- Nikon Z Flange-to-chip Distance ------------ 16 mm
Total optical path: 63,7 mm
To mount the UFC directly in front of the binoviewer, you need the Baader T-2 / 7.5 mm Extension Tube # 1508155. Insert the glasspath corrector into extension tube and place it between UFC and binoviewer.
For those binoviewers where the glasspath corrector is placed inside of the binoviewer with Zeiss Micro-bayonet (some combinations of MaxBright II and Mark V), just mount the UFC via T-2 in front of binoviewer or star diagonal.
It is not recommended to use the UFC with the 2" glasspath correctors for Newonians (# 2456300, # 2456301) or SCs & Refractors (# 2456305), because then distances are wrong.
Also, when attaching to the celestron 6" refractor would I attach the ufc directly to the T-ring and then the dslr?
In all of these cases I would need to attach a 2" nosepiece on the scope side...?
On the telescope side, you can use a 2"-nosepiece (e.g. Baader UFC S70 / 2" SC-thread (f) Telescope-Adapter # 2459128 at the UFC plus Baader 2" Safety Kerf nosepiece with 2" filter thread # 2408156), or a connection thread of the focuser, if available.
To use the UFC without a flattener, just attach it to your camera adapter.
On the telescope side, you need the 2"-adaptation as above.
On the camera side you need Baader UFC T-2 (m) Camera-Adapter # 2459115 for standard T-2-rings or - if you have a Wide-T-ring - the Baader S52 dovetail Camera-Adapter for Wide-T-rings # 2459119
The 8" EdgeHD reducer requires a distance of 105mm to the sensor, so we have 87.5mm for the UFC.
2459128 - Adapter for SC-thread of the telescope/reducer - 1mm length
2459110 - UFC base - 13mm length
2459115 - T-2-Adapter with male thread, fits into your camera - 2mm length
For the remaining 71,5mm, you can use several extensions, e.g.
- Baader UFC S70 Extension 15mm # 2459142
- Baader UFC S70 Extension 40mm # 2459143
- Baader UFC S70 VariLock 15-20mm extension # 2459145
If you set the VariLock to 16.5mm, you should have the perfect distance.
You can also use the smaller T2-extension tubes and Varilocks instead:
- Baader T-2 / 40 mm Extension Tube (T-2 part #25B) # 1508153
- Baader VariLock 46, lockable T-2 ExtensionTube 29-46mm with spanner tool (T-2 part #25V) # 2956946
It is in general a good idea to keep the filters closer to the camera, so the UFC-extensions should be better that the T-2-extensions - the closer a filter is, the less will optical distortions of the filter be a problem.
In addition, you need the filter sliders according to your filters:
- Baader UFC 2" (M48) Filter Slider # 2459112
- Baader UFC D 50.4 Filter Slider # 2459113
- Baader UFC 50x50 Filter slider # 2459114
- Baader UFC D 36 mm AUX-Filter-Holder (requires #2459113) # 2459152
- Baader UFC 1¼" AUX-Filter-Holder (requires #2459113) # 2459153
Awaiting for a your kind reply I send my
It is not possible to unmount the 2" filters from their cell and mount in the UFC 50.4mm filter slider - the glass in mounted 2" filters is only 46mm in diameter - otherwise they wouldn't fit in a 2" cell.
Baader UFC (Universal Filter Changer)
The Baader-UFC is the priceworthy answer to an ever growing problem. New camera-models come to market in ever increasing speed. Spacers between telescope and camera don´t support the correct distance or are subjected to torsion due to their flimsy design and heavy cameras. And the owner may want to change the telescope - or use several OTAs, but does not want to purchase new filters and filter sliders all the time. The Baader-UFC is a (seemingly) simple answer to a complex problem. It is made in the typical Baader-way, trying to connect each and everything in the most elegant and flexure-free manner.
The filter chamber (UFC-Base) is the core part, which up to now does accept three different kinds of filter sliders for 2"/ for 50 mm round and for 50x50 mm filter sizes. The filter sliders are kept in place by means of an adjustable magnet, to adjust the retaining force and to assure exact repositioning of the filter for repeatable usage of flats. A brass-pin mounted onto the far side of the filter-slider. This pin is sticking out at the opposite side of the filter chamber. The pin enables an easy eject of the filter slider without pulling on the filter slider, to not endanger the precise telescope position during exchange of filter sliders.
Versatile application – for almost any telescope / camera
The camera-side of the UFC-Base (the filter-chamber) remains open towards the camera - until the matching camera-adapter gets mounted directly onto the UFC-Base. The purpose of this is to have the filters mounted with minimum distance to the image sensor, avoiding additional vignetting.
The telescope-side of the UFC-base carries a receptor with 6 clamp screws in 60° spacings, to mount all the Baader-proprietory S 70-dovetail-adapters and spacers. A number of rigid UFC-S 70 spacer tubes is available in 5/15/40 mm length , as well as an ultra-stable S 70 VARI-LOCK spacer, engraved with Millimeter scale and being seamlessly adjustable from 15 to 20 mm. These four spacers will allow precise adaption with almost any backfocus situation, for both - back and prime focus - instrument configurations. Please accept the six tiny set screws, they are dearly necessary at times, when correct spacing becomes difficult. Each joint must be able to rotate, while requiring only a minimum of optical length.
Another set of telescope-adapters, with the male S70 dovetail facing the camera-side, completes the assortment, enabling the user to mount the UFC-assy onto almost any telescope firmly and flexure free. For the RASA-adaptation we even mill this RASA/S70 adapter plate from stainless steel, in order to provide the necessary stiffness while retaining the extremely thin flange tolerances required for the RASA-design.
For any telescope, for any camera - just replace the corresponding adapters on either side of the filter chamber when you change telescope or camera and want to keep on using your trusted set of filters.
As added benefit any camera lens can be used with the UFC. In this case, the UFC-Base will be fastened in front of the camera-lens with adding both the S70/SP54 adapter #2459134 and the retaining flange #2459121, as well as one of the many step-rings of the Hyperion-ring-system (#2958028 - 2958082) to be found here. Note that filters ought to be mounted in reverse order when using the UFC-filter changer in front of camera lenses.
Just one "click" onto the brass-pin releases the filter holder from the magnetic fixture. Afterwards it can be removed easily.
