I have a 2 inch Baader Diamond Steeltrack RT. Can you please confirm the function of the tension brake screw? When this screw is loosened, both the coarse and fine focus knobs can be turned. However when I tighten this screw, the coarse focus knob locks, but the fine focus knob can still be turned and the drawtube and the fine focus knob move as normal. Also when I tighten this screw, focus shifts. Is this correct behaviour, or should tightening this screw lock both knobs and the drawtube. This is not clear in the manual. Thanks.

I have a Scopos TL 805 and I would like to change my eyepiece because I have tilt.
I would like to have a clarification concerning the fixing of the BDS-RT (# 2957210).
Indeed, I have contradictory information. In the specifications, I see that the fixing is possible in 88mm dovetail but on this site:
72mm dovetail receiver permits 360-degree rotation of focuser with single-screw locking.
He's talking about a 72mm dovetail.
Can you clarify this point or offer me a fixing solution?

I am wondering what is required to use this focuser with a Takahashi 76dcu.
Question by: Can I use this focuser with my Takahashi 76dcu? Is there an adapter that I will need? on Nov 13, 2020 12:37:00 AM | 1 Answer(s)
Does the S58 dovetail mean that the steeltrack effectively has a rotator built in? I mean, if I use an S58 dovetail to M48 adapter for example to thread into my imaging train, I could then clamp it down onto the steeltrack in any chosen orientation of the camera?

I would like to replace the factory fouser on my Sky-Watcher Evostar ProED 80 mm f/7.5 ED APO refractor telescope with your Diamond Steel focuser, but can't find the proper adapter. The factory focuser inserts into the optical tube and is secured with three screws. The screws pass through holes in the optical tube and then thread into the factory focuser. The focuser insertion depth into the optical tube 15mm and the inside diameter of the optical tube is 96,66mm.

Please advise

I have Baader Steeltrack focusers on all my telescopes with the steeldrive motor and would like to fit the 2" Baader Steeltrack-RT to my Skywatcher Esprit 100ed Pro which currently has the stock 3" rack and pinion focuser, which has an M117x1mm thread on the telescope side. Is there a connection you do to allow this or are you likely to do a 3" version of the Steeltrack-RT i the future that would fit.

Do you manufacture a Steeltrack to fit onto a flat plate of larger telescopes? I need one to fit a 20" RC telescope that has a machined flat back-plate that fits flush onto the telescope and is then drilled to accommodate different equipment. Ideally we would like a Steeltrack attached to a flat plate with mounting holes that we can then attach to the telescope back-plate by four screws.

Baader RT Diamond Steeltrack on Omni XLT
Application example of BDS-SC Diamond Steeltrack
Baader RT Diamond Steeltrack with finder base and holder
The BDS-RT allows mounting of a finder base and holder (example: MQR-III #2457020)

General Specifications for all Baader Diamond Steeltrack® (BDS) focusers:

Drive system

  • True diamonds form a micro-geared high precision drive system never accomplished before
  • In comparison to conventional crayford or rack & pinion drives, this micro-geared movement has zero backlash, zero cogging, and zero flexure
  • Diamond Steeltrack 2" focusers lift a payload of 6kg (13 lbs) straight up, without slipping, without excessive bearing preload (bearing preload can be increased further if necessary)
  • Bearing system utilizes unbreakable Instrument Grade Roller-Bearings instead of simpler Ball Bearings - handles higher loads with greater rigidity and accuracy. No Teflon-pads anywhere
  • 1:10 Stainless Steel fine-focus mechanism, ready for attachment of the optional Diamond Steeldrive temperature-compensating motor drive system
  • Detachable drive block assembly is reversible for right hand or left hand fine-focus operation and for attaching the Diamond Steeldrive motor block
  • Shortest possible mechanical design achieves optimum balance between focuser height (backfocus) and rigidity requirements
  • Zero shift locking knob to precisely stop any movement without affecting optical axis adjustment

Baader Diamond Steeltrack Adapters
Multiple Adapters available for shortest possible connection to most cameras / eyepieces
Multiple Telescope-Adapters

Clamping system

  • S58 Dovetail ring-clamp built into focusing tube for accepting optional T-2 / M48 / M68 and other S58 direct-thread adapters to enable direct thread connection of accessories and cameras without 2" clamp
  • 2" eyepiece clamp with hardened bronze clamp ring (length of clamp: 12.5mm / ½") included as standard
  • Optionally available 2" Baader Clicklock-clamp w. integrated S58 dovetail (added length: 16mm / 5/8")
  • Two auxiliary threads (M60x1 and M55x0,75) cut into the RT & NT focusing-tube for attachment of dedicated field flatteners or focal reducers/correctors

Focusing Drawtube:

  • Each bearing individually adjustable for precise alignment of mechanical vs. optical axis
  • Ultra-hard subzero coated bearing races – precision milled and much harder than anodizing or stainless steel
  • Oversized 55mm inner clear diameter, to prevent vignetting, with anti-reflection knife-edge baffles

Fitting a 2-inch BDS-RT Baader Diamond Steeltrack Focuser to a Teleskop-Service GSO 8-inch Ritchey-Chretien
Fitting a 2-inch BDS-RT Baader Diamond Steeltrack Focuser to a Teleskop-Service GSO 8-inch Ritchey-Chretien

The TS 8-inch RC has M90x1mm connections at the focuser end of the scope. My setup has a TS 50mm extension adapter with for 6- & 8-inch RC connected to the scope (TS part no: GSRCV50), to accommodate the long back-focus.

Attached to this is a TS M90 tilting adapter flange (TS part no: GSRCJ90). This is an aid to collimation and allows the long axis of the focuser to be aligned with the optical axis of the scope.

I then have a standard TS monorail focuser for the RC, again with an M90x1 connection.

Image 1 shows the 50mm extension and tilting flange, with the old focuser removed. Note the M90 male thread at the end of the flange, to which the focuser connects.

Fitting the Baader Diamond Steeltrack RT

It is assumed that the reader has access to the Steeltrack manual and has purchased the necessary RT-Adapter M90x1 Diamond Steeltrack (Baader part number 2957283).

1. The Steeltrack RT is supplied with an M68 adapter as standard. Remove this by loosening the M5 screws around its outer edge. An M88 dovetail is exposed. See Image 2.
2. Connect the new RT-adapter to the Steeltrack, tightening the M5 screws sufficiently to hold it in place, but still just rotates. Note that the thumbscrew from the M68 adapter can be transferred. See Image 3.
3. Connect the Steeltrack to the tilting flange, rotate the focuser to the desired orientation, then tighten the thumbscrew to lock it in place. If desired, the M5 screws around the edge of the M90 adapter can be tightened for a firmer grip. See Image 4.

After fitting the Steeltrack, I can confirm that the focuser has the full 80mm inward travel.

This above method should still be applicable, even if a tilting flange is not present, as M90x1mm connections are standard on this size of RC. However, with only the 50mm extension in place, it may be that the focuser will not move the final 5mm of inward travel, depending upon the size of any baffle at the junction of the extension and the scope.

Note that an alternative method is not to transfer the thumbscrew from the M68 to M90 adapters, but to use the all the standard screws.

Grossartiger Auszug
