Can this Hyperion Zoom 2.25x Barlow lens be used with any eyepiece -- say a 5 mm EP for higher magnification, given your zoom stops at 8 mm -- giving equally good results as with your Mark IV zoom, or would quality be compromised in that case? Thanks in advance.

I initially posted this question regarding the Mark IV zoom eyepiece but should have posted it in connection with the 2.25 Hyperion barlow (which I am now doing).

I recently purchased both the Hyperion Mark IV zoom and Hyperion 2.25 barlow and have a question regarding set-up.

While the box for the zoom suggests that the barlow is attached directly to the eyepiece (see caption "thread for Hyperion Barlow" and arrow pointing directly at the eyepiece), the manual (https://www.baader-planetarium.com/en/downloads/dl/file/id/356/product/3117/description_and_recommended_accessories_for_the_hyperion_universal_zoom_mark_iv.pdf) indicates at p. 11 that "the barlow is attached onto the 1¼" nosepiece" (i.e. nosepiece between eyepiece and barlow).

Could you please advise as to the correct set-up? Does it matter one way or the other (my preference would be not using the eyepiece but I am happy to do so if this will improve performance)?

Many thanks in advance for responding at your very earliest convenience. Your kind assistance is much appreciated.

David

I have a newton 130/900 on eq2 and I have to connect my DSLR Canon EOS 100D through Hyperion Barlow; because the focuser is cheap I want to screw the barlow to the focuser thread. Is there an adapter that allows to screw the thread of the Hyperion Barlow (Focuser 1.25") and allows him even to use the 1.25" filters?

I tried to use this Barlow attached to the Hyperion zoom Mark IV but I found that I could not bring planets into focus. My telescope is a Televue Pronto of 480 mm. Is there some other attachment that I need to bring planets into focus?

The Baader Barlow lenses at a glance

With currently five different barlow lenses in Baader Planetarium's product range, it is not easy to keep track of which model fulfils which function best.

Fluorite Flatfield Converter (FFC) / 3x-8x (#2458200 , € 730,-)

90mm field of view also for medium format cameras - uncompromising quality even for extreme enlargements.

Focus gain: depending on configuration about 1.5-2.6cm

Carl Zeiss 1¼" Abbe Barlow lens 2x (#1603321 , € 477,-)

Legendary Zeiss quality for the common magnification range between 2x and 3x (with additional T-2 extensions). With T-2 connection for cameras or eyepiece clamps. The qualitatively equivalent solution to the Fluorite FFC when smaller field size and smaller post-magnification are desired.

Focus gain: About 3 cm

VIP 2x modular barlow lens, visual and photographic (#2406101 , € 228,-)

Versatile barlow lens for magnifications from 2x, for use with cameras (via T-2 thread) and eyepieces. Calculated for 35mm image diagonal (full format). With additional T-2 extensions it can also be used for slightly higher magnification factors.

Focus gain at 2x: Approx. 3.3 cm

Baader Q-Barlow 1.3x/ 2.25x (#2956185 , € 55,-)

Inexpensive and amazingly high quality Barlow lens for the lower magnification range: In addition to being used as a normal Barlow lens with eyepiece clamp (with factor 2.25x), the Barlow element can also be used as a negative lens group when screwed directly into (almost) all eyepiece sleeves or directly in front of a camera with 1.25" filter thread and then provides a lower magnification of approximately 1.3x. Ideal for adapting a modern planetary camera to the resolution of an already long focal length telescope. Prerequisite: There must be no other elements in the nose piece that would prevent the approximeately 13 mm long Q-Barlow lens group from being screwed in.

Focus gain at 2.25x: About 0.4 cm

Hyperion Zoom 2.25x Barlow lens (#2956180 , € 133,-) Specially designed for the Hyperion Zoom eyepiece, also fits the filter thread of other eyepieces.

With the included T-2 adapter, it can also be used directly on cameras; provides about 2.7x at 55mm working distance and about 2.3x at 25mm.

Focus gain: About 1.1 cm

Perfect for f/7 Telescopes of Aperture 7" or Less
At the Hyperion Zoom's 8mm setting, this Barlow provides the maximum magnification for f/7 telescopes of aperture 7" or less. For moon, planetary, and double star viewing, start at 24mm and zoom in until reaching the atmosphere-limited optimal magnification for the evening. So much better than swapping out Eyepieces!

Barlow isn't necessary for scopes of f-ratios higher than f/7.0
