Andor’s iKon CCD camera series
The various iKon CCD models (-M, -L, -XL) provide quantum efficiencies of >90% across a broad wavelength range. The vacuum sensor enclosure allows for thermoelectric cooling down to -100 ° C (absolute sensor temperature) and the camera’s read out electronics guarantee very low read noise characteristics. Andor’s iKon CCD camera solutions are particularly suitable for low-light applications and are also ideal for measurements, which require long exposure times. Such measurements also benefit from the extremely low dark current of this camera series.
The iKon CCD range offers pixel sizes of 13 µm, 13.5 µm, 15 µm and 24 µm and offers excellent linearity (better than 99%) and uniformity.

Optical Detectors for the Discovery of Transiting Exoplanets (Post by Andor Technology)
The transit method is currently one of the most successful indirect techniques to detect extrasolar planets. To date, over 3800 exoplanets were discovered, from which the majority was found using the transit method. This technique is based on observations of a planet passing in front of its host star (= transit), as seen from an observer on Earth. The planet in transit blocks a fraction of the stellar light and thus causes the stellar brightness to decrease periodically. SPECULOOS Southern Observatory Hunts for Habitable Planets (Post by Andor Technology)
On January first, after only 2 years of construction in northern Chile, the SPECULOOS Southern Observatory started its fully robotic survey operations. The observatory is the core facility of a new exoplanet search called SPECULOOS, which stands for “Search for habitable Planets EClipsing Ultra-cOOl Stars”. It aims for nothing less than to detect rocky and temperate planets well-suited for the detection of chemical signatures of life in their atmospheres. This ambitious goal is only made possible by the combination of modern astronomical equipment, efficient detector technology, and one of the best astronomical sites in the world. Webinar: Hunting Exoplanets with the Next Generation Transit Survey (Post by Andor Technology)
Andor’s iKon CCD series is in high demand especially within the exoplanet community, which perform exoplanet searches and follow-up characterization studies. This is due to, for example, the cameras ideal suitability to operate in remote observing locations (e.g., no vacuum repumping necessary, in-field replaceable shutter) and the availability of a sensor option with extended NIR sensitivity. The latter is important especially for observations of cool stars. The Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS), a dedicated search for exoplanets, is a great example for an on-going observational astronomy project involving Andor iKon-L CCD cameras. NGTS is comprised of 12 fully robotic 20cm telescopes, each equipped with custom-designed iKon-L CCDs providing exoplanet observations in the 600-900 nm wavelength band. At Andor, we are proud that the capabilities and characteristics of the iKon CCD series can contribute to the discovery of planets with sizes smaller than Neptune, which is a crucial step towards finding a possible Earth-twin in the future.
