Update 05/2023:

New OHY Planetary- and Guiding Camera QHY 5 III 678 M/C

The QHY 5 III 678 M/C is the latest evolution of version 2 of the QHY 5III series of planetary and guiding cameras. The QHY 5 III 678 M/C can be considered an improved version of its predecessor, the QHY 5-III-178M CMOS Camera (#1931024 , € 375,-) .

Like the Sony IMX 178, the new IMX 678 sensor from Sony is a back illuminated (BSI) sensor in 1/1.8 inch format. However, compared to the IMX 178, it has a higher resolution (smaller pixels) and a higher QE, as well as increased sensitivity in the near infrared spectral range (NIR). In addition, the QHY 5 III 678 M/C camera modules has the same improved features as detailed below.

Original-Blog from 11/2022

The new QHY-5-III series cameras are the 2nd generation of planetary and guiding cameras. Compared to the first generation 5 III series, the new models have been significantly improved in terms of interfaces and hardware configuration. Among other things:

  • Larger internal image memory DDR 512MB
  • Improved front and end design
  • Compatibility with CS and C-mount lenses
  • USB 3.2 Type-C interface
  • Universal ST-4 guiding port
  • Control LED for status indication
  • New Sony sensors with extra high sensitivity

The 2nd generation QHY-5-III series planetary and guiding cameras are all equipped with 512 MB DDR3 internal image memory. This increases the safety of losing individual images at high frame rates.

This is a great advantage for solar, lunar and planetary photography, where large amounts of data often have to be transferred to the PC/laptop in a very short time. Some of the DeepSky cameras still on the market today, for example, only have a 256 MB image memory. In comparison, the 512 MB DDR3 memory of the new QHY Series 5-III 2nd generation cameras is a considerable improvement.

New front-end design for better compatibility

The new QHY5III series cameras feature a new front-end design with better compatibility. Like the 1st generation cameras, the camera can be mounted directly into a 1.25 inch mount directly in the focuser. C and CS mount lenses can be adapted directly. A standard 1.25 inch filter can be screwed in at the front. In addition, any filter without a filter mount can be inserted into the optical path (the diameter is based on the sensor size).

USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C interface

The 2nd generation QHY cameras of the 5 III series now have a USB 3.2 Gen 1-C interface. It is designed for a longer life span and can transfer data at up to 5 Gb per second.

We recommend using the official data cable from QHYCCD. The market is flooded with a large number of inferior Type-C cables where it may cause the camera to malfunction. If you want to use your own cable, please make sure it is a high quality cable.

The ST-4 guiding interface

The customized interfaces of the 1 generation planetary and guiding cameras have been replaced by a more universal ST-4 compatible guiding interface in the new QHY-5-III cameras. Even if the supplied cable is lost or damaged, you can now easily and inexpensively source a replacement cable on the market.

Status LED indicator

The new cameras are equipped with a status LED on the back of the camera. If the camera is working without malfunction, the LED is switched off so that the light from the LED does not interfere. If there is a malfunction, the LED lights up, with different colours indicating different malfunctions.

The first two cameras of the new generation of Series 5-III are the QHY-5-III-200M(ono) and QHY-5-III-585 C(olor) models.

These models are described in detail in the following product announcements for each model:
