  • APOD: M33 - Triangulum Galaxy taken with Planewave CDK14

Impressive Image, taken with PlaneWave CDK14, chosen as APOD (27. September 2018) Convince yourself of the incredible resolution   The small, northern constellation Triangulum harbors this magnificent face-on spiral galaxy, M33. Its popular names include the Pinwheel Galaxy or just the Triangulum Galaxy. M33 is over 50,000 light-years in diameter, third largest in the Local Group of galaxies after the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), and our own Milky Way. About 3 million light-years from the Milky Way, M33 is itself thought to be a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy and astronomers in these two galaxies would likely have spectacular views of each other's grand spiral star systems. As for the view from planet Earth, this sharp image shows off M33's blue star clusters and pinkish star...
  • Nissan Navara ‘Dark Sky’ with Planewave telescope

Who doesn't dream of a mobile telescope that can easily be taken to remote locations? At the IAA in Hannover, ESA and Nissan presented the concept vehicle Nissan Navara 'Dark Sky': The all-terrain pickup pulls an air-conditioned trailer on which a Planewave CDK17 astrograph is permanently mounted on a L-500 mount. The ProPILOT technology with automatic coupling makes driving with a trailer easier, so that the telescope can also be brought to remote observation sites far from light pollution. The design not only incorporates cosmic aspects, but also makes additional light sources superfluous with reflective strips. The interior lighting is designed in red light to protect the dark adaptation. In the closed, air-conditioned trailer, the can be cooled down to the observation temperature at night. On site,...

  • Impressions of the lunar eclipse 2018

Lunar Eclipse-Viewing with Baader Planetarium For the first time in our company history, we have organized a small "Star Party" for an astronomical event. On Haldenberg, near our headquarters in Mammendorf, we have set-up a few binoculars and telescopes and announced this in advance in the local newspapers. Since we could only provide a limited number of employees for this event, we deliberately did not advertise the event online in order to avoid being "overrun". But even so the event got around so well per "mouthspeak" that we finally had about 200 visitors in the main phase. Below you can see early pictures of the setup, at a later (darker) hour the moon and Mars attracted all eyes, so that we have no further photos...

  • MoFi 2018: NEODYMIUM - Moon & Skyglow-Filter

The most important filter for the planetary season – better contrast for Mars, Moon and Jupiter. Planeoptically polished and MC-coated – with IR-cut coatings! Drastic contrast enhancement for all telescopes, without loss of image brightness! This filter is initially based on a development by Carl Zeiss. The effect of the element neodymium as filter material is very impressive. If used as co-mixture to optical glass, it improves the contrast and enhances the red portions of the image (especially for Mars and Jupiter). At night it blocks that part of the spectrum, which suffers most from street lighting – and it blocks the light pollution, also known as „skyglow“. And lastly, the applied UV/IR blocking coating (Luminance-coating - check the spectral trace) cuts all unwanted UV...
  • ISS Solar Transit with AstroSolar Photo Film

On April 14th, Philipp Salzgeber was able to catch the ISS while passing in front of the sun. For this, he used a filter made from AstroSolar® Photo Film OD 3.8 (#2459278) He kindly gave us the permission to repost his blog post from http://www.salzgeber.at/astrophotography/solar/iss-solar-transit. As the ISS orbits our planet, from time to time it passes in front of the sun for a given location. https://www.calsky.com and https://transit-finder.com/ allow you to predict such transits for your location. On Saturday, April 14th 2018, such a transit happened, and I was able to capture it: (Of course the sound is artificial!) I used a 127mm refractor with a 2x teleconverter, shooting FullHD Video in DX crop mode on a Nikon D750. Here are some images taken...
