For years our colleagues Martin Rietze and Michael Risch have been hunting for the next solar eclipse in the most remote places in the world.

See e.g. our previous blog posts on AstroSolar.com:

    • 2015: Solar Eclipse Adventure in Svalbard

Martin Rietze and Michael Risch from Baader Planetarium – both solar eclipse chasers – have again traveled to the event and brought us impressive images and videos. Svalbard is one of the few islands where the path of totality on March 20th, 2015 crossed land. Its 1300km from North Pole Our chances for good weather were somewhere around 50% so it was more or less gambling flying there to see the Total Solar Eclipse...

  • 2016: Solar Eclipse on the Molucca Islands

After last year´s amazing eclipse in arctic regions with -25 degrees Celsius a Team from Baader Planetarium (Martin Rietze, Michael Risch) experienced an extreme contrast at this year´s eclipse which took place in tropical regions on March 9th. 35 degrees Celsius and 80% humidity were predicted along the shadows path. We decided for the Molucca Islands between Sulawesi and New Guinea that belong to Indonesia. But beforehand we stopped over on Borneo to climb the 4.100m Mt. Kinabalu and experienced the phantastic nature...

[br]
This year, 2017, Martin Rietze (an eclipse enthusiast and passionate volcano photographer, see also www.mrietze.de) was alone in the USA. Finding a secluded place without further spectators was almost impossible with this extremely popular solar eclipse. Still, with only about 20 other spectators on the mountain "Static Peak (at 3400 meters), Jackson Hole, Teton Range" he found a good place and brought back impressive pictures.
See below some pictures and a short video animation in low resolution. Download here the Video in original 4K-resolution.

UPDATE 02.03.2018: We have received a detailed Morpheus 17.5mm Test review from William Paolini. Further reviews, information on the author asf. can be found on the 17.5mm Morpheus prodcut page/a>

UPDATE 15.02.2018: From today until May 15th, 2018 we feature our Morpheus® Family Promo with reduced prices for all eyepieces of the series.

UPDATE January 30th, 2018: 17,5mm Morpheus® 76° eyepieces are now available for sale on our website and will be soon available at all of our dealers.

UPDATE January 24th, 2018: We confirm that we have completed the production of the 17.5mm Morpheus 76 ° eyepieces and will start delivering all pre-orders to dealers in the next few days. On our website, we will also put the eyepiece in stock soon. We thank you for your trust and patience.

For the Morpheus® 17.5 mm we have gone a very long way to end up with a perfect product. It definitely took many more iterations than we had in our planning. The Morpheus® eyepiece design at 76° of field does sound very moderate when compared against the far greater advertised apparent fields (and Cost!!) of those 82°, 92° and 100° eyepieces presently offered. The optical design is at it´s very and absolute limits.

Image of one of the many Morpheus® 17,5mm prototypes - incl. new rubber eyecup with built-in M43 metal thread

However - what we try to do here is really, matching the most natural (and sharp, non-distorted) widest field of view that a human eye can take in without rolling the eyeball around - while making the rim of the field disappear. It is the famous "floating in space effect" that only comes up in the brain when the user has an effortless seeing experience. And being able to enjoy this experience "in Stereo" with a binoviewer is the grand difference to any of the other eyepieces in this league - since their bulky bodies will not allow you to put even a tiny nose in-between them.

Effortless and immersive viewing experience is our motto for the Morpheus® eyepiece line. This is exactly the difference from all those wider field eyepieces. Trying to catch the advertised field on any of those others is all but effortless.

But indeed, to reach the same viewing experience as on all of the shorter Morpheus® focal length eyepieces, the 17.5 mm has taken all of our hardest efforts. As of now we are up to three ED-elements and one Lanthanum element in an eyepiece of 8 lenses altogether - and we still must increase some lens diameters to live up to the "floating in space" design goal.

We apologize for announcing this eyepiece way too early before realizing the problems in production and thus creating a lot of frustration. The development took much more time and money than expected. But definitely will we fill all existing orders at the offered price and we will bring an eyepiece to market that will fulfill the promise we made.

Cross-section of the Morpheus® 17,5 mm - with 3 ED- and one Lanthanum-lens

There is always that same triangle equation: "excellent/fast/affordable - you may choose two". We are very sorry - we were forced to skip the "fast". The eyepiece will come to market at the price we offered, but only when it meets our expectations. We do hesitate to provide the release date since we have already tried the patience of our customers multiple times.

We never took backorders/prepayments for this eyepiece, but didn't realize that our dealers/distributors did just that. We beg everyone for pardon who has been waiting faithfully until now for not keeping the delivery date. Our dealers will return deposits to anyone who will cease to wait - and we will reimburse our dealers in case they will suffer losses due to this.

And really – fulfilling the technical promises as advertised is the hardest task in all production. We will do it and not release the 17.5mm Morpheus® until it fully meets our high expectations.

Thanks for your continued patience.
Your Baader Planetarium Team

CEDIC-sq_17_600px(0)From 10. - 12. of March 2017, the annual CEDIC '17 (Central European Deepsky Imaging Conference) takes place in Linz, Austria in the "Ars Electronice Center".

Christoph Kaltseis and the CEDIC Team have ceated a highly interesting program of different lectures and workshops. Amongst other Professional Astronomers such as Yuri Beletsky (Chile) and Adam Block (USA) will be there, as well as Jerry Bonnell (NASA, APOD),

Baader Planetarium represents the brand 10 Micron with a presentation on Saturday Marcht 11th, from 11:45 to 12:05 am. Unfortunately, the lecture program has now been booked, the limited CEDIC passes are all sold out. You can only register on a waitlist for the event, in case some participants do not show up. However, the access to the foyer is open to everyone, where we welcome everyone at our booth, who does not participate in the conference. UPDATE 09.12.2016

ufc-dslr-sp54_camera-adaptation_300Just in time for christmas we have added a few more products to our Online-Shop. Our Highlight of course is still our UFC-System, which is available since about a week and was featured in this Blog-Post.

1603321_zeiss-abbe-barlow_d
But we also can offer a "classic product" once more. For a limited time the Carl Zeiss 1¼" Abbe Barlow lense 2x is available again!

  • Carl Zeiss 1¼" Abbe Barlow lens with T-2 thread made in Germany by Carl Zeiss in Jena – with 1¼" / T-2 ClickLock eyepiece clamp by Baader Planetarium
  • visual Barlow lens and photographic eyepiece projection in one system
  • Direct T-2 Adaption possible - extends magnification up to 3x - without loss of quality
  • The image quality is only exceeded by our 4x-8x flat field FFC-Converter, in case the projection factor exceeds 4x

Spectral transmission curve of the Zeiss Abbe Barlow

This (german) document attests to the exceptional performance of the multi-layer anti-reflection coating applied onto the new 2016 Carl Zeiss Abbe-Barlow-Lens made in Jena / Germany. Carl Zeiss has chosen to develop and apply the very best coating ever made available to the most discriminating visual observer. The coatings feature a 0.2% loss over the exact spectral region where the night-adapted human eye is most sensitive. This extremely high efficiency also translates to near-zero coating scatter for the highest contrast ever seen. No lens-system has ever been coated to more stringent requirements for visual observation and for VIS-photography as well.

Furthermore we added the following products to our line of items

  1. 2957282-95-96_bds-adapterAdapter for Diamond Steeltrack Focusers:
A high-quality focuser is a must-have for photography and great for visual use. The Baader Diamond SteelTrack focusers feature 1:10 reduction and an optional motor drive which makes them a great alternative to the standard focusers of many telescopes. In comparison to standard Crayford or rack and pinion focusers, they have a microgeared high-precision drive system with zero backlash, zero cogging and zero flexure.
We are working on a number of other adapters, to make it always more easy to replace your old focuser against a Baader Diamond SteelTrack.NEW: BDS-RT Adapter for Refractors with an inner diameter of 97mm (e.g. Synta, Celestron) – #2957282
    NEW: BDS-RT Adapter for Sky-Watcher M90x1 – #2957283 – Attention: long delivery-time
    NEW: BDS-RT Adapter for Sky-Watcher M90x1,5 – #2957284 – Attention: long delivery-time
    NEW: BDS-RT Adapter for Explore Scientific – #2957285 – Attention: long delivery-time

  2. 2954250_morpheus-hyperion-m43-erweiterung_dM43 extension:
This spacer ring with 7,5mm optical height enables the user to increase the height eyecups in case of need, e.g. for Hyperion or Morpheus® eyepieces. Also this helps to keep any smartphone holder to firmly clamp over the exiting eye-lens. In addition multiple of these M43- rings may be added to achieve the optimum distance to your camera chip for eyepiece projection. From approx. February 2017 included in scope of supply of all Morpheus® eyepieces
  3. 2455040_coldtemp-netzwerkkabelNetwork-Cables for Outdoor Use:Network cables with ColdTemp-specified CAT-7-wire (CAT6a plug). Red jacket especially suited for observatories. This special jacket stays super-elastic and break-proof even at low temperatures. Normal network cables especially when used inside of mounts may break or get damaged because of the narrow bending radii. Because of the CAT-7-specification, the cable may also be used in conjunction with power cables with up to 230V inside of a mount over short distances, without affecting the data quality.
Available in 5- 15- und 30 Meter length.
  4. 2958552-53_umkehrringe_dChanger ring S52/M48 and M48 / T-2:These inverter rings are also part of our Sony E/NEX T-Ring #2408317 and of the Protective Canon DSLR T-Ring #2958550. You can use them to combine T-Rings with S52 dovetail with accessories with M48 thread (2" filter-thread) or with T-2 thread. Both adapters are now available on their own.

S52 barrel on Sony E-Nex adapter (#2408317)

In addition we now offer our S52 barrel – which is used since long as part of the Canon Protective EOS T-Ring – as single item. In combination with the new S52 Clicklock-clamp  (available as combo-product) this results in a 37mm 2" extension. Furthermore it can be used as 2" barrel for our Sony E-Nex T-Ring with S52 dovetail.

Also new are our extremely thin M68 spacer rings in 0,3 (black) / 0,5 (red) / 1mm (gold) as well as the M68 extension tube with 7,5mm length. The thin rings fit between all M68 threads and prevent binding between two M68 threaded parts. The 7,5mm tube extends the existing System of M68 rings/extensions.

Lastly we included a SP54 DT-Ring to M43 to our product range.

Baader-UFC, the universal filter changer that "grows": All parts of the Baader UFC System will be available in 4-6 weeks –  just in time before christmas.

Morpheus 17,5mm extreme widefield eyepiece: we do apologize for the long delay since first announcing this eyepiece. The new 17.5mm Morpheus® has been reworked and consists of an eight-lens construction with three ED- and one Lanthanum-lens. It is the most elaborate widefield eyepiece in our company history. The folding winged rubber eyecup has been reworked and will contain a metal thread to firmly fit onto the M43 thread - be it folded up or down. An M43 extension ring will be included to the basic Morpheus® scope of supply.
With this 8mm extension the distance of the foldable, as well as the winged rubber eyecup can then be finetuned to optimum height. Also this helps to keep any smartphone holder to firmly clamp over the exiting eye-lens. In addition multiple of these M43- rings may be added to achieve the optimum distance to your camera chip for eyepiece projection.
The 17.5mm Morpheus® is expected for spring 2017.
UPDATE May 2017: Please read more information about release/backorders of the Morpheus® 17,5mm here:

Dear Customers

It took a little while... but now we also have a modern Online-Shop

NEW: integrated knowledge-database

We have tried hard to create more than a "standard" online-shop. The wealth of information that grew over the years on our old website (detailed product application examples, customer review and practical results on Baader products) was integraded to this website in form of product description or additional product information (WordPress Posts).
A wealth of information awaits you.

NEW: detailed technical data

We added a lot of technical data to our products in the form of attributes. E.g all Baader adapters were measured anew. For all telescope- and eyepiece-sided connections, the adaptation options were defined and stored in form of sortable attributes.
Discover the required accessories for your equipment.

filters-navigationsearchNEW: multiple search options

The left sidebar now allows setting a variety of attribute filters. For example, in the category "adapter & photo accessories" all adapters with telescope-sided T-2 (M42 x 0.75) thread can be selected to show up. Or you could choose in the category "eyepieces" a range of focal lengths. And if the sidebar does not suit you, then use our powerfull search function.
Find the product you are looking for - fast and easy.

customer-reviewNEW: interactive exchange possible

You can write a customer review on each products - with images / videos - and rate it with stars. Each review can be commented by other customers to allow a discussion on products. Furthermore each product has an "Ask Question" button. After clicking this button you can enter your product question. If you didn´t check  "Is question private?" it will  appear on the product page after moderation. It will be answered either by an admin or by other customers.
Share your experience and answer questions on productsproduct-question

SHIPPING: currently only to selected countries

dealer-locatorYour country may not be available to be selected for initiating the shipping process. It means that we do ask you kindly to contact us for any product questions - and to contact our national distributor or one of it´s local dealers - for placing an order. Please have a look at our dealer locator which will further improve asap. Our distributors must set their prices in their national currency and consider their cost of import, distribute, and locally support Baader products. They also try to ensure that pricing is similar or less than the cost for a customer to import single items directly. This ensures parity across worldwide regions. The fluctuating exchange rates certainly complicate this pricing. Please take into account customs tariff, import charges and UPS-insured shipping when comparing prices on this site. You will find that most prices available published in your own country actually are similar to a direct imported price in Euros. We do not ship via postal service because regular post - and DHL even - are unable to track parcels outside of Germany. It has caused a lot of frustration with lost shipments were we had to take the loss finally. This is another reason why we do not send individual orders but supply to distributors with forwarders that will monitor the complete route door to door.

CURRENT SITUATION - and what awaits in the future

Currently only Baader products have been implemented into the .com website. A comparison between the old 49 Baader product-sections at baader-planetarium.de and the corresponding new menu-structure at baader-planetarium.com can be found below. Products of our contractual partners and the guest brands that we represent in Germany or Europe are not yet implemented into the .com website. Products of 10Micron, AstroPhysics, Alt, ATIK, Avalon, Celestron, Optec, Planewave, Software Bisque, Starlight Instruments, TEC and Zeiss are still to be found on our .de websites. All of these guest-brand presentations will be easier to navigate in the new system as well - but it still takes some time to move that content. We do ask for your patience.

2016 – is our 50th year of operation. A decent anniversary announcement will follow - with actions and product offerings - once all other brands that we represent have also moved to the new site.

We appreciate your comments and / or questions about this website in the comment form at the end of this post.

Sincerely yours,
Baader Planetarium Web-Team
