What is SP54 thread compared to M54, and can they interchange??

The Special thread 54 has another pitch than the common metric M54 threads. The pitch is 0.7 mm - an approximation of a US-norm of ancient days "step-down rings"- which was quite common. And even then, M54 is not clearly defined - some manufacturers use pitch 0.75, others use pitch 1 mm in order to make their parts unusable for others - it´s a mess.
