On my Newtonian: If I'm using a MPCC w/this zoom and alternating between visual and T2 w/Nikon APS-C, is there some sort of extension I could use (clicklock preferred), so that I don't have to add/remove the focuser ring extension each time? To make matters even more fun, this will be used on a Bresser Hexafoc... Is this doable?

I want to do projection photography with the Zoom Mark IV using a Canon EOS R with and without the Hyperion-Barlow 2.25x using the 2" barrel with my telescope.

I believe I can do this by using a Wide-T-Ring Canon R (2408336), a UFC S52 Camera-Adapter (2459119), a UFC Base (2459110), a UFC S70 / T-2 Adapter (2459130), a Baader TQC/TCR Heavy duty T-2 Quick Changing System (2459130) and a M43 / T-2 Adapter (2958080).

What I am not sure of is exactly what UFC S70 and/or T-2 extensions I would need to get the recommended back focus for use with the full frame EOS R camera. I am also not sure if I could fit the #2459130 in the setup, it would be convenient but by no means necessary. I am also not sure if I would require different extensions when using the Barlow.

Can you please confirm if these parts will work as I intend (with or without the #2459130), what extensions I should use to get the recommended back focus with the EOS R camera and if I need different extensions when using the Barlow?

I have an old Kowa TSN-1 without eyepiece and would like to get a Baader Hyperion Universal Zoom Mark IV, 8-24mm eyepiece (1¼" / 2"). The thread on the Kowa is unfortunately not standard. I measured using a caliper and thought it was M41x0.75. After reading a buyer comment on your site M41.5 was mentioned for Kowa TSN-2. Which thread size and pitch is it on the Kowa TSN-1? It was also mentioned that you could make an adapter for the eyepiece to fit. Could you make an adapter for TSN-1 if I order the eyepice from you? How much extra would that cost?

1) I was told that the 1.25 nose piece does come off but when I looked at one in the store it looks like there are small set screws in the side. I tried to twist off the 1.25 and it would not budget. Does it come off?
2) the vendor said the 2" is only for ease of use. You get no advantage of using the 2" re more light gathering. Is this true?
3) If #2 is true then you do not buy 2" filters with this eye piece
4) you do not get the normal "space walk" feel of the 2" with this eye piece if #1 is true so you might as well buy a 1.25 zoom or a 2" dedicated zoom if you want that 2" feel?

I recently purchased both the Hyperion Mark IV zoom and Hyperion 2.25 barlow and have a question regarding set-up.

While the box for the zoom suggests that the barlow is attached directly to the eyepiece (see caption "thread for Hyperion Barlow" and arrow pointing directly at the eyepiece), the manual (https://www.baader-planetarium.com/en/downloads/dl/file/id/356/product/3117/description_and_recommended_accessories_for_the_hyperion_universal_zoom_mark_iv.pdf) indicates at p. 11 that "the barlow is attached onto the 1¼" nosepiece" (i.e. nosepiece between eyepiece and barlow).

Could you please advise as to the correct set-up? Does it matter one way or the other (my preference would be not using the eyepiece but I am happy to do so if this will improve performance)?

Many thanks in advance for responding at your very earliest convenience. Your kind assistance is much appreciated.

Description

Details

Hyperion Zoom 2 Zoll und 1.25 Zoll
Hyperion Zoom 2 Zoll und 1.25 Zoll
Continous magnification with ClickStop at 8/12/16/20/24 mm

The Hyperion Universal Zoom Eyepiece can be adjusted steplessly from 8 to 24 mm of focal length. In addition focal lengths 8 / 12 / 16 / 20 / 24 mm are marked with „ClickStops“, so that any of these five magnifications can be set intuitively. This is especially of importance for use with binoviewers.

Two Mark IV eyepieces can be set most easily to the same magnification, even in the dark. The click-sound has been smoothened, so that hunters or birders will not disturb  their targets when zooming in on them.

Hyperion Mark IV Universal Zoom 8-24mm Eyepiece

with 1¼" / 2" nosepieces and ClickStop-Action

Zoom-lenses in general are not really famous for high quality optics. Also many zoom-eyepieces do not deliver the best possible image quality at high magnification because they were designed with focus on the price-tag so that image sharpness and field size is getting worse with increased magnification.

The recognition that the Hyperion Zoom Eyepiece enjoys is based on the fact that it was designed the other way around: the glass selection and most of all the principal optical design and consequently the lens polish quality – all were optimized for the highest magnification. And obviously, when closing in on an object you will want the field of view to increase and not to have it become seemingly smaller. Hence the Hyperion-Zoom shows the largest apparent field of view at highest magnification.

For many birders, observers of nature and astronomers alike, the Hyperion Zoom Eyepiece is their favorite eyepiece, it is also the only zoom-eyepiece that was designed from ground up to be used with bino-viewers.

Either 1¼" or 2" can be adapter (not simultaniously) to the Hyperion Universal Zoom Mark IV

What's new in the model "Universal Zoom Mark IV"?

Even Bestsellers can be improved: The fourth generation of this eyepiece weighs 290 gram and is lighter by 80 grams than its predecessor - it now has 55 mm diameter to become useful in dual mode from 55 mm interpupillary distance, both features make it especially desirable for use with bino-viewers. The adjustable eyecup can be removed to expose the M43 video/photo thread and create the maximum "nose space" for using it on binocular viewers with the supplied winged rubber eyecups - for maximum concentration on the target. The click-stop action has been smoothed out to more easily access the magnification stops at 8/12/16/20 and 24mm (click-stops are mandatory to easily and precisely set both eyepieces to the same focal length for effortless binocular observation without eye-strain). The zooming-mechanism as well as the inner zooming rails for all lens groups have been modified to improve cold temperature operation and the parfocalty for each focal length has been finetuned.

Most important however – the Mark IV offers almost 4 mm more backfocus. This is most beneficial for application with a multitude of spotting scopes. Two different Adapters for telescope and spotting scope adaptation are included with the eyepiece (Spotting-Scope Adapter „A“ and Telescope-Adapter „B“). Read more at "Telescope-sided Connections").

The Mark IV comes with both the 2" and 1¼" nosepieces mounted, each nosepiece having it´s own dust cap and both nosepieces are threaded to accept either 1¼" or 2" eyepiece filters. Both nosepieces are free of the hated undercuts. Instead our proprietary Zero-Tilt Safety-Kerfs provide an added measure of security by reducing the tendency of an eyepiece to slip from an unlocked eyepiece clamp. An additional little feature is the Baader-yellow soft pouch with integrated belt strap – which fastens onto many tripod legs just as well, to serve as a bin for all dustcaps that may go astray otherwise.

As usual with Baader eyepieces, the Mark IV offers an M43 photo/video thread on top of the eyepiece, to allow attachment of any desired DSLR or T-2 accessory for mounting a video-camera by means of the optional M43/T-2 adapter ring  #2958080. Unchanged is the optical quality, 68° field of view at highest magnification, Phantom Group multicoatings, a large adjustable eyecup or alternatively two M43 rubber eyecups for bino viewing. An optional spacer ring M43/M43 (#2954250) with 7,5 mm extension enables the user to increase the height of these eyecups in case of need.

The Mark IV likewise accepts adaptation of the 2.25x Hyperion-Barlow onto the 1¼" nosepiece, to transform into a high power zoom, featuring the magnification range of 3.6 to 10.7 mm. The Hyperion Universal Zoom Mark IV is available individually (#2454826) or as set together with the 2.25x Hyperion Barlow (#2454827)

Furthermore included in the scope of supply are two adapters of different height - both with 1 3/8" inner threads - for following uses:

  • Spotting Scope-Adapter A: 4mm gain on backfocus. the Mark IV focuses with all tested spotting scopes (optional adapters available for most major brands)
Many spotting scopes nowadays do allow the mechanical insertion of astronomical 1¼" eyepieces – but in many cases this combo cannot focus to infinity. By utilizing the supplied spotting-scope adapter ring "A", the Hyperion Universal Zoom reaches almost four mm deeper into the eyepiece clamp of all those spotters, to safely reach infinity focus. When removing the 1¼" nosepiece, a 1 3/8" thread inside the "A"-ring will make the Mark IV firmly thread onto all Celestron-Ultima spotters and it´s namesakes. Optional available is a bayonet-adapter for Zeiss Diascope-spotters (#2454500). Threaded adapters for many other famous spotting scope brands (that still don´t allow 1¼" eyepiece adaptation) will become available in the future – now that it makes sense to produce them
  • Telescope-Adapter B: Sufficient distance to clamping screws..
When using the Mark IV on a telescope though, the "B"-ring (supplied) should be chosen instead, to keep the bottom of the eyepiece flush with the upper end of most star diagonals. Otherwise the bottom 2" SC-threaded holding ring that holds the "A" or "B" ring in place may directly rest on the clamping screws of the star diagonal. The supplied 2" SC-ring also allows the Mark IV to firmly mount the eyepiece onto any SC-thread, especially onto our 2" clicklock star diagonal, with the help of the 2"/2" adapter (#1508020).

Please see the instruction manual for more information on changing both Adapters.

Camera-sided M43 thread

Camera-sided Connections

As usual with Baader eyepieces, the Mark IV offers an M43 photo/video thread on top of the eyepiece to directly attach most video cameras. It also allows attachment of any desired DSLR or T-2 accessory by means of the optional Baader Hyperion T-Adapter M43i / T-2a  #2958080. An optional spacer ring M43/M43 (#2954250) with 7,5 mm extension enables the user to increase the height of the included eyecups in case of need or to attach M43 cameras without touching the lenses.

A further connection capability offers the SP54-system thread-in the form of the Hyperion DT ring system. For this system, the transition ring M43/SP54 #2958086 is suitable for the Mark IV zoom eyepiece. This adapter enables the connection of all common camera lenses on the Hyperion zoom to use it for Eyepiece Projection. Those connection rings are called "Hyperion DT rings", see our section "Eyepiece accessories" .

Hyperion Zoom included eyecups

Included eyecups

Three different eye cups are included in the basic equipment of the eyepiece.

  1. Initially mounted is the large height-adjustable eyecup that also fastens onto the M43 photo-thread of the eyepiece. By rotating it counterclockwise the height will increase. This eyecup easily unthreads simply by rotating it upward further than the uppermost stop - this reveals the M43-thread connection
  2. A none-folding rubber eyecup alternatively fits straight onto the M43-thread. This is the preferred solution for observers without glasses at a binoviewer. It gives you enough room for your nose and good support to keep the perfect eye distance.
  3. An even lower eyecup with foldable winged eye shield especially serves for wearers of eye glasses, the flappable side shields block stray light and side image information not part of the eyepiece field of view. This helps to concentrate on the target when using a binoviewer.

Application Example

Comparison: Original Zeiss photo adapter and Baader Hyperion Universal Zoom Mark IV eyepiece as photographic projection

  1. Zeiss Diascope photo adapter produces one fixed magnification
  2. Zeiss Diascope with Baader Hyperion Mark IV Universal Zoom eyepiece and T-2 quick change system (T2# 6/7) gives five magnification with increasing field of view

Zoom Okular

Splurged on a quality zoom rather than skimping on many fixed focal length eyepieces
I live in an apartment in a light-polluted area. Astronomy for me means balancing the portability of my telescope setup against the quality of image provided, while minding my budget.

The Hyperion Zoom had great reviews and wider Fields of View than cheaper models drew my attention. The 1.25" or 2" nosepieces allow for homogenizing barrel diameter with other eyepieces of either size, should my requirements require the purchasing of higher or lower power EPs outside of the Zoom''s range.

I took the plunge and am pleased with the results. The Hyperion Zoom has proved to be the indispensable mainstay I'd hoped it would be!
  • This zoom helps me optimize the portability of my telescope setup with a minimum sacrifice in quality
  • The modularity of the Hyperion Zoom means you have to pay attention to the particular section you are twisting lest the eyepiece come apart in some unintended fashion

A Versatile Accessory
I recently got back into astronomy after having enjoyed it as a kid, and bought myself an inexpensive reflector. I chose this zoom unit because it seemed to be a Swiss Army Knife of capabilities.

So far I have only tested a few stars and the moon. The main thing I noticed is, as I zoomed-in and refocused an object, it would be just as crisp and clear as before but only bigger.

This unit is much better than the telescope I bought, so I will be using it when I trade-up to a better scope.

The fit-and-finish is excellent and the threads are precise. The included case is very handy and keeps the unit safe.

My next purchase will be the Barlow which goes with this zoom unit. I won't have to buy many more eyepieces because I'll be well-covered, at least for now.
  • high-quality, versatile
  • It's a tight fit when installing into a 1.25mm eyepiece socket; I really have to push to get it seated. Everything is brand-new, however.

Baader Planetarium Zoom 8 - 24 mm

  • Zeitgemäßer Weitwinkeleinblich in allen Zoomstufen

  • Fehlanzeige

Hyperion Mark 4 Zoom and Barlow combo
The nose piece for the zoom lens arrived brand new and is cross-threaded and will not thread any of my filters. Here is Baader's response to my complaint.."Answer: We had indeed problems with a small part of the latest delivery of 1.25" nosepieces, where some of them exceeded the tolerances. We are currently waiting for replacements.
It may take some time until we receive the replacements, as they have to be made newly.
Please contact your dealer about a replacement (he handles the warranty issues); if you bought it at us, please drop us an email with a copy of the invoice as proof of warranty.
Please excuse the inconveniences, we hope that we can provide you soon with a replacement."
Really..!..Am I unreasonable in thinking this is simply just NOT GOOD ENOUGH ...why not take one off one that isn't faulty and just send it to me..?..
What kind of customer care strategy is this...this is a completely inadequate solution for one of your faulty products. How come my question regarding this was removed from the questions list.?.
  • That i am holding it in my hands....
  • I can't use it because the 1"1/4 nose piece thread will not properly engage in the zoom lens.

Baader zoom, a chance for affordable image quality
Baader made a adapter ring to fit to a 41.5mm thread, this allowed me to fit the baader hyperion mk4 zoom to my Bausch and Lomb HDR60 scope, I did have a HDF zoom eyepiece on it but the baader hyperion gave much more comfortable view as it is wider, it was like it transformed the scope into a 65mm one after using the other eyepieces...Also using the 41.5mm adapter I fit the baader zoom to my kowa TSN-2 which made a very good scope into a excellent one with very good image from min to maz zoom.
  • Baader zoom gives a chance of affordable image quality usually only found by having much more expensive equipment.

Hyperion Mark IV Zoom
An outstanding astronomical accessory. For many observing sessions all you would need is this one eyepiece and a Barlow to get to higher magnifications. Tested it against my Pentax XW eyepieces and it performed just as well showing very high contrast, bright, and crisp views. In my 254mm f/4.7 Dobsonian with coma corrector, star points remained tight even at the field stop. Observing a selection of galaxies and nebula the Mark IV Zoom showed these objects every bit as excellently as my Pentax XWs while giving me more flexibility since I was able to adjust the magnification instantly to find an exit pupil that rendered the object the brightest and best. I also now use the Hyperion Zoom exclusively in my P.S.T. solar telescope since it allows finding the optimum magnification to best render the solar details. It was especially valuable when observing the Moon allowing you to instantly go from whole Moon views to close ups on areas of interest. In a binoviewer I have never had such an enjoyable time lunar observing in my 50 years in the hobby! Eye relief is very comfortable and its mechanical operation was smooth and precise. An outstanding product and highly recommended.
  • Excellent optics, Quality build and smooth operation, Flexibility.
  • Common to almost all zooms, the AFOV changes as you zoom.

Very good eyepiece with minor cons
Use this eyepiece on a variety of telescopes including 85mm and 152mm high end APO refractors, 8" , 11" and 14" HD SCTs and a 22" DOB. Overall a very good eyepiece. Only two minor cons:
1. Needs a bit more in focus than most of my other eyepieces from a variety of manufacturers. It works on all my telescope with the exception of one Ha solar setup so need to use a different configuration on that scope.
2 Took a while to figure out how to remove the eyepiece hood so I can attach the 43mm/Tmount adapter. Didn't see that covered in the instructions....(you twist the entire eyepiece assembly to unscrew".
3 The Tmount adapter uses a 43mm thread which is not the "industry standard" so although I have a bunch of those adapters for all my other gear, I had to buy the proprietary adapter for this this eyepiece.

Overall though it is a very good eyepiece with contrast and resolution that match my best fixed focal length eyepieces. Frankly the 2" and 1 1/4" feature is of questionable use on an astronomy telescope since the only need for the 2" barrel is with a ultra wide FOV eyepiece on the longer focal length sizes and this one is 24mm so not needed. Guess it does allow fitting to some other spotting scopes.

NOTE that a previous question asked whether this would work with a Pentax ED spotting scope and the factory answer was they thought it should. I have that same scope and it won't come to infinity focus over the entire zoom range.....not enough in-focus. This was too bad as that was something I hoped would work.....but other than that it has met all my expectations.
