Tips for Choosing an Energy Rejection Filter for H-alpha-Observations
The purpose of an Energy Rejection Filter is to prevent as much solar energy as possible from entering the telescope in the first place and thus avoid excessive heating of the etalon of an H-alpha filter. This is done most effectively by a filter in front of the telescope. At the same time, this prevents the air in the tube from heating up - the telescope remains close to the ambient temperature, and there are no air turbulences inside of the OTA due to temperature differences. If we look at the solar spectrum, it becomes clear that such a filter must primarily block visible light. Ideally, it reflects the solar energy energy instead of absorbing it and and does not heat itself up in the process as well - that's why these filters are called Energy Rejection Filters (ERF for short). Since it is occasionally asked: A Herschel wedge or a white-light front-filter cannot be used as an ERF because it also darkens the H-alpha line. First Class H-alpha Solar Filters by SolarSpectrum
Temperature controlled H-alpha-filters (lambda = 656,3 nm) with electronic temperature control (combined heating and cooling!) Solar Spectrum H-Alpha Filters give you an incomparable view of our Sun's eruptive surface. The SolarSpectrum filters follow the classical design and are placed behind the telescope in the focuser (although this requires a D-ERF energy rejection filter in front of the lens). In combination with a telecentric system tuned to the focal length of the telescopic, between 2/3s of the aperture and the full aperture of the telescope can be used with most refractors and SC telescopes, depending on the telescope's f/ratio! The telecentric system parallels the beam of light and extends the focal ratio of the telescope to the mandatory value of about 1:30. Other narrow-band H-alpha filters are placed in front of the telescope lens. They are avaiable at affordable prices only up to 90mm diameter. Solar imaging with the TEC 140 f/7 Fluorite Apochromat
On 2 June 2021, our customer Alan Jadanić sent us these amazing solar images taken with the TEC APO 140 f/7 Fluorite Apochromat (#1351005 , € 10650) . He used our kam unser D-ERF Energy rejection filter 135mm, a Solar Spectrum H-alpha Filter and the 2" Research Grade TZ-3 Telecentric System (3x focal length) (#2459257 , € 445) . Thank you! We would like to empahasise the multifunctional usability of the TEC APO 140 FL for DeepSky, visual observations and H-alpha. This optic can really be used day and night and is therefore a real all-rounder. Dear Mr. Baader, I have spent a few days with the TEC 140FL and a Solar Spectrum RG38 0,5Å filter and I must say that it is a very good filter both for visual observations and photography. The telescope for itself is an exceptional piece of astronomical equipment and with an excellent sharpness. With an ASTF 140 solar filter for white light, you can see the sunspots perfectly and even solar granulation is clearly visible. The FeatherTouch 3545 focuser is probably the best focuser you can find on the market and it comes as a standard with TEC 140FL As for the SolarSpectrum H-alpha...
