StarSense: Make your telescope fully-autonoumous – for Celestron or SkyWatcher mounts
The quick and easy start into astronomy
The STAR SENSE module turns a telescope which you have operate into a robot which does what you want. All you have to do is enter time and location when you start it up. Then, the StarSense's camera will take three pictures of the night sky and analyze them within three minutes. After this, the telescope knows where to find the stars, planets, nebulae, and galaxies in the sky. By the press of a button, it will show them to you – and even make suggestions what else you can see at the moment! You can start right away without previous knowledge of the night sky and become an amateur astronomer in one night. There 40.000 celestial objects included in the database.
Experienced astronomers will like the affordable StarSense-module, too: It replaces expensive software for mount modelling and makes a high pointing precision possible by using the positions of many stars all over the sky. And of course you can use the time required by the telescope for the automatic alignment process to prepare yourself for the night.
StarSense for Celestron is compatible with all modern Celestron GoTo-mounts as well as with many older models; StarSense for Sky-Watcher is compatible with many Sky-Watcher SynScan-mounts. Please check the compatibility list below; a firmware upgrade of the mount may be necessary.
StarSense at telescopes with an alt-az mount
Telescopes with an alt-az mount – even motorized dobsons – are the perfect match for the StarSense module: There is no need to polar-align the mount, all you need to do is set-up the telescope under a clear sky with a good view of at least three quarters of the sky. Then, enter date, time and location – this is not even necessary if the telescope has got built-in GPS or the optional SkySync GPS-module.
Now the StarSense camera will take some pictures of the night sky, and after approximately three minutes it will have enough data for a model of the sky. All you need to do now is select the objects which you want to see from the large database of the hand control. It's even no problem if you were surprised by good weather and could not plan an observing session: Simply press the Sky Tour button, and StarSense will automatically slew to all the best stars, planets, galaxies, and more currently visible in the night sky.
All you have to do yourself is look through the eyepiece – what could be easier?
StarSense at telescopes with equatorial mounts
StarSense can also be used at equatorial mounts (like Celestron Advanced VX (right), CGEM, CGEM DX, CGE Pro or Sky-Watcher SynScan mounts like EQ6, EQ8, AZ-EQ5, AZ-EQ6). A permanent mounted telescope gives you then the same comfort as an alt-az mount.
In a mobile set-up, you still have to polar-align your mount, because the guiding axis must be parallel to the axis of the Earth. But StarSense can help you here, too: Once you did a first, rough polar alignment (e.g. when the telescope is in the starting position and you can see the north star in the finderscope) and start up the StarSense module, the telescope will look for alignment stars – if you use more than two alignment stars, you can improve the pointing precision for visual observations. Or you start the proven and reliable AllStar Polar Alignment which is also used by the Celestron NexStar hand controls. Now, you can point the telescope at another star – but you must do this with the screws at the mount, so StarSense can only help you and not do it all for you. But you no longer have to use the polar scope (and knee under your mount to do so), and you can set up the mount with enough precision for photography – easy and comfortable. The second alignment of the mount after you have pointed it at the celstial pole is done automatically by the StarSense module.

- StarSense Technology: No need to identify or locate any star in the sky – StarSense automatically aligns your telescope, so you can begin observing in minutes
- Two finder-bases included – fitting either for the smaller dove-tails of Celestron/Vixen/Skywatcher-telescopes, or for the large Schmidt-Cassegrains
- The only telescope accessories for an automatic alignment
- Alignment is finished in three minutes – or less!
- Provides advanced mount modeling – align on numerous stars throughout the sky for extremely precise GoTo pointing accuracy
- StarSense hand control (English-language)
Please note that that you may have to update the firmware of the motor controllers to use StarSense with your mount. For this, you need the Motor Control Update Software fromCelestron.com. Unfortunately, older (not supported) mounts can't be upgraded to work with StarSense.
If the necessary, long screws (8-32 UNC, 1/2 inch) were not included with your Schmidt-Cassegrain, we offer a set of mounting screws (item number #889001) - this may especially be the case with the NexStar SE telescopes. EdgeHD-telescopes already have the large finder base which can also be used with the StarSense module, most other Celestron-telescopes have a fidner base hich is compatible with the smaller adapter included with the StarSense-module.
